Undefeated Mound City Defeats Top Ranked Sacred Heart

(MOUND CITY)- The Mound City girls basketball team improved to 9-0 with a 45-37 win over Class D2 top-ranked Falls City Sacred Heart Tuesday night in Mound City. 

The game featured five first half lead changes and six ties before the Panthers put the Irish away at the free throw line in the fourth quarter. The Panthers led 13-12 after a quarter, 20-17 at haltime and extended the lead to 34-22 at the end of three. Panther senior Kendey Eaton hit a half-court shot at the buzzer to end the peirod for the Panthers. 

Sacred Heart which had not lost a game since December, 2014 scored 9 strsight points to start the final period and eventually tied the game at 37 before Mound City scored the final 8 points of the game to seal the victory.

Eaton led Mound City with 22 points. She hit 7 of 8 free thrwos in the final period. Kameron Freemyer scored 9 points and Tess Phillips had 8 for the Panthers.  It was Panther defense that was impressive in holding the Irish is 37 points, 9 below their average.

Haylee Heits scored 14 points and Magie Goltz had 13 for teh Irish.  They combined for 11 points in the fourth quarter to help pull the Irish even before Mound City scored the final 8 of the game. 

In the boys game it was Sacred Heart improving to 6-3 with a 64-26 victory over Mound City. The Panthers are now 3-6. Bailey Witt scored all 12 of his points in the second quarter for the Irish who were led on the night by Henry Arnold with 15 points.  

Ben Shifflett led teh Panthers with 14 of their 26 points.
