Five NEKS Top Senior Basketball Stars Selected for KBCA All-Star Games

Five area athletes are set to play one final basketball game representing their high school as they will play in the annual KBCA All-Star game set for Saturday, June 25th at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas. 

Three area girls will suit up for the KBCA All-Star basketball game as Courtney Heinen of Axtell, Brandi Jo Roepke of Valley Heights and Alexis McAfee will compete in the contest. While on the boys side of competition a pair of area athletes will suit up for the game as Zane Richter of Jackson Heights and Cooper Leach of Doniphan West will play in the game. 

Heinen helped guide the lady Eagles of Axtell to their best State finish in school history in her senior year on the basketball court as the team finished 22-4 and State runner-up in Class 1A-DII. Courtney compiled multiple individual honors on the basketball court being named All-State by the KBCA and multiple other outlets, while being named 1A-DII "Player of the Year" by Sports in Kansas. The Axtell senior posted 18.2 points per game in her senior year filling the rest of the stat sheet with 5.9 rebounds per game and 3.5 steals per game, while surpassing 1,000 career points, also. On top being part of the State runner-up basketball team this year at Axtell, she helped the lady Eagles take second in 1A-DII State volleyball this year and third the previous year and has competed at State track.

Roepke battled through adversity in her high school career coming back from an ACL injury this year and returning to the court in a strong fashion for the Valley Heights lady Mustangs averaging 27.8 points per game, 8.7 rebounds per game, 1.5 assists per game, two steals per game and 1.3 blocks per game. The Mustang senior has enjoyed a great amount of success in high school being a part of the 2014 1A-DI State runner-up basketball team, winning multiple State track titles and being named first team All-State by the KBCA in 2A this year, along with other publications. Roepke plans to continue her basketball career next year at Washburn University. 

Sabetha Bluejay senior, Alexis McAfee finished out her Bluejay basketball career helping the team finish 24-2 and notch a Class 3A State runner-up finish. McAfee garnered first team All-State honors by the KBCA and several other publications for her play this past year after averaging 13.3 points per game, six rebounds per game, six assists per game and three assists per game. The Bluejay senior as committed to Wayne State College in Nebraska to continue her basketball career at the college level. 

Richter of Jackson Heights helped guide the Jackson Heights Cobra boys to the Class 2A State title and a 24-2 record this year, winning the NEKL title with a 16-0 League mark also on the year. The Cobra senior was named 2A first team All-State by the KBCA and several other publications, while also being named Class 2A "Player of the Year" by Sports in Kansas all while averaging 23.5 points per game, 8.9 rebounds per game, 3.7 steals per game and 2.5 assists per game. 

Leach was named the Class 1A-DI "Player of the Year" by Sports in Kansas after averaging 16.3 points per game, 6.7 rebounds per game, 2.9 assists per game and 2.2 steals per game in his senior year. The Doniphan West senior was named to several All-State teams including first team honors from the KBCA, while also helping the Mustangs finish as the 1A-DI State runner-up as a junior. 

All five area athletes have had great high school athletic careers and will get to suit up to play several other top Kansas senior basketball players on Saturday, June 25th at the annual KBCA All-Star games at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas at 6:00 and 8:00pm.
