Area Athletes Compete at KU Relays

For the 89th time the Kansas Relays took place and yet again this year some of the top high school track athletes from across the country competed against each other with several area athletes participating in the action. 

Three Top four finishes led the performances of the area athletes at this year's Kansas Relays with a second showing by Kaley Dalinghaus of Nemaha Central leading the charge. Dalinghaus behind a toss of 42'01.25 took second in the girl's shot put, a competition that featured 26 competitors. The Nemaha Central Thunder also took sixth place in the girl's javelin with a toss of 127'01, a competition that featured 23 competitors. Her fellow Nemaha Central Thunder in Jacob Koelzer also had a strong showing at the Kansas Relays placing fourth in the boy's 100 meter dash with a time of 10.82; 42 runners competed in the 100 meter dash. Koelzer also snagged a ninth place finish in the boys long jump (22'00.25), competing against 29 other jumpers. 

Caleb Bradley of Nemaha Central also competed for the Thunder at the Kansas Relays taking 13th place in the boys pole vault. 

Valley Heights Mustang, Kayla Smith grabbed the other Top four finish for the area athletes at the Kansas Relays as she took fourth out of 28 competitors in the girls triple jump with a leap of 37'02.25. Smith also finished 16th in the girls long jump. Her fellow Mustang, Shelby Vermetten also competed in a pair of events at the Relays finishing 14th in the discus and 24th in the shot put. 

Several other area schools had competitors at the Kansas Relays as Atchison, Perry Lecompton, Jeff West, McLouth and Washington County all had at least one competitor at the competition. 

For Atchison in the girls action the 4x100 meter relay team finished 37th, while the 4x400 meter relay team tallied a 27th place finish and the Distance Medley Relay placed 24th, while Emily Jaloma competed in the 300 meter hurdles taking 41st place. The Atchison boys finished 39th in the 4x400 meter relay and 34th in the 4x100 meter relay. 

For Perry Lecompton, Abbi Folks finished 21st in the girl's triple jump and Lexia Jamison placed 32nd in the girls 800 meter run. 

Jeff West had one competitor at the Kansas Relays as Makayla Greene took 23rd in the girls javelin, while McLouth's, Anna Moore finished 40th in the girls 100 meter hurdles. 

Jae Eaton and Neal Ehler both competed for Washington County finishing 16th and 23rd, respectively in the boys shot put and javelin at the Kansas Relays. While in the girls competition Jenna Hennerberg finished 25th for the Tigers in the shot put.
