Valley Falls and Troy Fall Victim to State Champs Colgan in 2-1A Baseball - Trojans Place 3rd

Pittsburg Colgan has now won 20 High School State Baseball Championships and their fourth straight title included wins against Valley Falls and Troy on Friday in Great Bend before defeating Medicine Lodge is the finals.  

Troy beat Elkhart 10-0 in the opening round, while Colgan topped Valley Falls 9-0 before Colgan topped the Trojans in the semifinals by a 14-2 score.  Due to weather and delays, there was no third place game played; however, the Trojans were awarded a third place trophy, which is the best finish in school history.  

Troy 10, Elkhart 0

 Brody Winder tossed four innings of no-hit baseball, including two frames on Thursday evening before weather suspended play and two more when the game resumed at 10 AM on Friday morning.  Troy led 4-0 when play was halted before the third inning on Thursday night as Wil Smith hit the first pitch of the second inning for a solo homerun and the Trojans ended up with four runs on four hits in the frame.  On Friday, Troy got two more tallies in the third and put the game away by scoring four more times on four hits in the fourth to win by run-rule.  Luke Smith and Wyatt Huss each had two hits and Luke scored three runs.  Alex Martinex and Cuttar Huss each delivered a pair of RBI and Cuttar was 3-3 at the plate. The win gave Troy baseball a 20th win for the third straight season and their third straight state tournament continued.

In the final first round game played on Friday, Valley Falls pitcher Dawson Gatzemeyer got around trouble in the first two innings and Colgan left four runners stranded and the game was scoreless into the bottom of the third.  The Dragons committed a pair of costly errors in the fourth and the Panthers took advantage by playing four unearned runs on just two hits.  Colgan added a run in the fourth and four more on five hits in the fith to put the game out of reach.  Valley Falls mustered only one hit in the seventh inning (Daxton Ross) and had only four total base runners in the contest against Andrew Stewart. before ending their season with a 14-10 record.   Gatzemeyer made it through five tough innings with 121 pitches before taking the loss and Colgan had 12 hits to improve to 20-4 on the season.  Valley Falls was making their first state baseball appearance since trips is 2012 and 2013.  

Pittsburg Colgan 14, Troy 2

In the second semifinal game on Friday evening, a dropped fly ball error with two outs allowed Colgan to get a trio of unearned runs.  Troy did make it 3-2 going into the third inning, but Colgan pounded out six runs on six hits in the third to go out 9-2.  Troy ended up with only six total hits, including two from Chris Winkel.  Brody Winder again started the game but was replaced by Wyatt Huss in the third frame after allowing 10 hits and 9 runs in 2 and two-thirds innings, although only five runs were earned.  Colgan put the game away with Simon Higginbotham's three-run homer in the fifth, which ended his 3-4 day with six RBI.  Troy ended their season 20-3 and was awarded a third place trophy, despite the third place contest being canceled by the KSHSAA because of previous weather delays.
