The legion baseball season rolled along on Sunday with all four teams squaring off in double headers. Two of the double headers counted in the Northeast Kansas League standings as Silver Lake swept Oskaloosa and Atchison swept Corning. While, Sabetha and Doniphan County each earned sweeps against League foes but in non-league action as Sabetha beat Leavenworth and Doniphan County beat Seneca.

Doniphan County Sweeps Non-League Twin-bill With Seneca

After winning their first two series of the season the top two teams in the NEKL last year squared off in Wathena on Sunday as Doniphan County hosted Seneca and earned 6-3 and 11-4 wins.

A three run third inning gave Seneca the lead early but Nathan Gaarder who pitched a strong seven innings kept Doniphan County in the game holding Seneca to just those three runs and the Doniphan County offense came through late. After five and one-third solid innings from Neil Sudbeck, Cody Rottinghaus came in for Seneca on the mound and Doniphan County got to him late with a run in the sixth and five in the seventh to earn the walk-off win 6-3 on a Wil Smith grand slam. Smith finished with two hits and four RBI to lead Doniphan County, while Cuttar Huss chipped in two hits and Gaarder earned the win on the mound going seven innings giving up three runs on five hits, three walks and struck out five. Rottinghaus led Seneca going 1-2 with two RBI's and a walk, while Dalton Hiltibrand, Trenton Henry, Dylan Schraad and Sudbeck each had a hit.

Game two saw Seneca have an early lead and led until the fifth inning when Doniphan County snagged the lead and ultimately the 11-4 win. Wyatt Huss started and pitched five innings, while recording three hits with three RBI's, while Chris Winkel had a home run with three RBI's and Tucker Morris registered two hits. Hiltbrand took the loss on the mound for Seneca.

Doniphan County improved to 6-0 (4-0) on the season with the sweep and Seneca moved to 4-2 (2-0) on the season. Both teams continue the season on Wednesday on the road as Doniphan County travels to Oskaloosa, while Seneca heads to Silver Lake.

Sabetha Makes It Four Wins in a Row With Sweep of Leavenworth

After a pair of wins against Atchison on Friday Sabetha picked up a pair of five inning wins against Leavenworth in non-league play on Sunday winning 9-1 and 10-2.

Game one saw Kyle Grimm earn his first career legion win on the mound as Sabetha picked up the 9-1 win and Grimm surrendered only one hit and one run in five innings. The trio of Riley Herman, Dustin Gruber and Brandon Brownlee paced the Sabetha offense in the win. Herman had two hits and a run scored, while Gruber scored three runs and Brownlee had three RBI's.

Pitching was strong in game two for Sabetha also as Joe Gruber tossed a three-hitter to help push Sabetha to the 10-2 five inning win. Gruber gave up two runs but both were unearned and walked only one batter, while striking out eight. All the offense for Sabetha came in one frame in game two scoring all 10 runs in the third inning sending 14 hitters to the plate in that inning with a Kaid Allen two-run double highlighting the frame.

The pair of victories push Sabetha to 7-3 (2-2) on the season and Leavenworth falls to 0-8 (0-4). Sabetha hits the field again on Tuesday at Falls City for a single Senior legion game and will host Corning on Wednesday (6:00pm game of the double header will be on 103.9 KNZA), while Leavenworth will be in action again on Wednesday as they host Atchison.

Silver Lake Remains Unbeaten With Sweep of Oskaloosa

It was a tale of two different games between Silver Lake and Oskaloosa on Sunday as Silver Lake won both for the sweep but in very different fashion, holding on for a 12-11 win and cruising to a four inning 21-7 win.

Game one proved to be a high scoring affair with each team having plenty of opportunities. Silver Lake jumped up 1-0 before Oskaloosa took the bats off their shoulders but they answered with a two-run bottom of the first to make it 2-1 just after the first inning. Silver Lake quickly grabbed the led back with a four-run spot in the second and it was 6-2 after two. Silver Lake added two more runs in the fourth and five in the fifth, but Oskaloosa plated three in the fourth and two in the fifth and trailed 12-8 going into the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth Oskaloosa scored three to make it a one-run game but Silver Lake clung to the lead and ultimately pulled out the 12-11 win. Garrett Huseke led Silver Lake's 12-hit attack with three hits, while Oskaloosa who registered 11 hits had Reed tally three hits.

Plenty of more runs were scored in game two also but Silver Lake did most of the scoring cruising to the 21-7 win and sweep. Two runs early in the first game Silver Lake the lead and they added six, seven and six runs in the second, third and fourth to snag the win. Wyatt Heiman, Reed Walker and Jake Lindstrom each had two hits in the Silver Lake win, while Kyle Frick earned the win on the mound throwing three of the four innings.

The sweep moved Silver Lake to 6-0 (4-0) on the season, while Oskaloosa fell to 2-4 (2-2) on the season. Both teams are back in action on Wednesday as Silver Lake will host Seneca and Oskaloosa plays host to Doniphan County.

Atchison Sweeps Corning for First Wins of the Season

Just young into the season but both Atchison and Corning were looking to get into the win column this season when Atchison host Corning for a twin-bill on Sunday. Atchison went on to pick up their first two wins of the season winning 12-1 and 15-4 both in four innings.

Atchison jumped on Corning early in game one plating five runs in the first inning, highlighted by an Adam Smith two-RBI double. The lead continued to grow for Atchison over the next two innings as they scored four runs in the second and three more in the third to lead 12-0 and go on to earn the 12-1 win in four innings. Hunter Ostertag earned the win on the mound giving up one run on four hits, one walk and struck out five, while Dustin Talley took the loss for Corning giving up nine runs in two innings. Corning's lone run came in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Adam Kuckelman.

Game two saw Corning take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first but Atchison grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first scoring two runs. The lead went back to Corning in the top of the second with a three-run inning but a three-run bottom of the second pushed Atchison back in front at with six runs in the third and four in the fourth went on to grab the 15-4 win in four innings. Atchison out-hit Corning 10-1 in the contest and was led by Cline who had three hits, while Austin Bonnel and Marcus Denton each had two hits. Colton Buessing took the loss on the mound for Corning surrendering nine runs in two and two-thirds.

With the wins Atchison moved to 2-4 (2-4) on the season, while Corning is 0-4 (0-4) in legion action. Both teams are back in action on Wednesday as Atchison travels to Leavenworth and Corning heads to Sabetha. (6:00pm game of the double header will be on 103.9 KNZA)
