Seneca Shuts Down Sabetha For Pair of Shutout Road Wins

Seneca put some more between them and the rest of the Western Division in the Northeast Kansas League standings with a pair of wins against Sabetha on Thursday night winning 10-0 in four innings and 8-0 in five innings for their third and fourth straight shutout wins.

Game one it was the pitching of Dalton Hiltibrand partnered up with balanced offense pushing Seneca to the 10-0 win in just four innings against Sabetha. Hiltibrand carried a near perfect game going into the fourth giving up just one base runner on a error by his defense to that point but the no-hitter was taken away by Kaid Allen who had a two-out single for Sabetha but that would be the only hit of the night for Sabetha. Dalton earned the win going four innings throwing the shutout giving up just one-hit and striking out three and he helped out on offense took going 1-3 with a triple, two RBI's and run scored earning him McDonald's "Player of the Game." The offense was balanced for Seneca with eight of the nine batters registering a hit and eight guys scoring at least one run also in the game, the big output for Seneca in the 10-0 four inning came in a six run third on four hits, four walks and an error.

It was much of the same in game two as Seneca pitcher Cody Rottinghaus tossed five innings of shutout no-hit ball giving up just two walks, while striking out nine to earn the win, as Seneca won 8-0 in five innings. Seneca again spread the offense around scoring two runs in the first and third innings and four in the fourth with 2-3 performances at the plate by Tristan Allen and Mitchell Henry leading the way. Henry notched four RBI's in the game, while Derek Uphaus had a two-hit game and Kurtis Niehues finished 1-2 with three runs scored, two RBI, a walk and reached on an error.

The wins moved Seneca to 11-3 on the season and 9-1 in League action, while Sabetha fell to 14-6 on the season and 6-5 in League action. Seneca will next be in action on Wednesday at Corning as their double header for Saturday with Oskaloosa has been moved to July 12th, while Sabetha will take the field again Friday night at home as they host Wymore (NE) for a junior/senior legion double header.

Doniphan County Routes Falls City in Doniphan County Tournament

The annual Doniphan County tournament got underway in Wathena on Thursday night with the host Doniphan County taking on Falls City and it was Doniphan County continuing their winning ways this season with a 17-0 four inning victory.

Offense out pouring of runs continued for Doniphan County against Falls City as they plated five in the first inning and busted out 12 runs in the second cruising to the 17-0 four inning win. Nathan Gaarder led the offense with five RBI's and blasted a grand slam, while Wil Smith had a home run and three RBI's in the win. Brody Winder earned the win on the mound tossing a four inning perfect game.

With the win Doniphan County improved to 14-0 on the season and will take on the winner of Silver Lake and Atchison on Saturday for the Doniphan County Tournament title. Silver Lake and Atchison play Friday night in Wathena in their Tournament contest. The junior legion portion of the tournament saw Doniphan County beat Falls City also on Thursday, claiming the 4-1 win, improving to 10-2.

Oskaloosa Snaps Long Losing Streak With Sweep of Leavenworth

After opening the season with a pair of wins Oskaloosa found themselves on the wrong side on the win/loss column losing 10 in a row but that losing streak was snapped on Wednesday with a League double header sweep of Leavenworth. Oskaloosa claimed 9-1 and 1-0 wins in the twinbill.

Game one it was the strong pitching of Dalton VanHoutan along with his bat that helped Oskaloosa lay claim to the 9-1 win, as VanHoutan at the plated was 3-3 with a home run. Game two was a tighter ballgame as Oskaloosa snagged the 1-0 win with Ethan Burghart earning the win on the mound and the one run came from a solo home run by Kyle Hopkins.

The wins push Oskaloosa to 4-10 on the season and 4-6 in the League, while Leavenworth fell to 1-15 overall and 0-10 in League action. Both teams will be in action again on Sunday as Leavenworth travels to Corning and Oskaloosa will host Sabetha (Oskaloosa's double header against Seneca originally scheduled for Saturday has been moved to July 12th).
