Another hot day and the heat played a factor in the legion baseball action on Wednesday canceling one of the Northeast Kansas League. Doniphan County was scheduled to take on Leavenworth on the road but the games were cancelled due to excessive heat ruling by city of Leavenworth; the games will be credited to Doniphan County as a pair of forfeit wins. 

The other NEKL double header scheduled for Wednesday did take place as Seneca traveled to Corning and earned the sweep in a pair of four inning games. 

Seneca Scores Plenty to Sweep Corning in League Action

Seneca continued to separate themselves at the top of the West Division standings in the NEKL picking up two League wins on the road on Wednesday with a pair of four inning wins over Corning, 15-4 and 20-1. 

The night featured a barrage of home runs by Seneca as they hit 13 on the short field in Corning between the two games. Seneca snagged an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run bomb from Kurtis Niehues, but Corning lead the bottom of the first off with a solo homer from Braden Deters to make it 2-1. Seneca stretched the lead back out with a three-run second and two more in the fourth on a two-run Cody Rottinghaus home run to establish a 7-1 lead. Corning again cut into the lead plating two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 7-3 affair. The game went firmly into the hands of Seneca in the top of the fourth as they posted eight runs on seven hits, including four home runs, along with a walk and hit batter. Corning scored another run in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by Colton Buessing but came up short to continue the game sending Seneca to the 15-4 four inning win. 

Dylan Schraad earned the win on the mound for Seneca giving up four runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out 10 and hit a solo home run to earn McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors on KNZA and KMZA. Niehues led the Seneca offense with a 3-3 game with a two-run homer, double, three RBI, three runs scored, while Rottinghaus finished 2-3 with a home run, double and home run. Neil Sudbeck, Dalton Hiltibrand and Lucas Schraad also had a home run for Seneca in the win. Buessing led Corning going 2-3 with a home run, while Deters, Dustin Talley, Peyton Deters and Mitchell Kuckelman each had a hit. 

Seneca jumped on Corning early in game two taking a 6-0 lead in the first inning on four hits and two walks with a two-run homer by Dylan Schraad highlighting the inning. A two-run shot by Hiltibrand and solo homers by Tristan Allen and Kurtis Niehues in the second scored four more runs for Seneca and they added six in the third and four again in the fourth to cruise to the game two 20-1 four inning win. Corning's lone run came in the bottom of the first on three hits and a walk, including an RBI single from Sean Rempe. 

Hiltibrand led Seneca picking up the win on the mound tossing three of the four innings and went 3-4 at the plate with three home runs and seven RBI's, while Niehues went 2-2 with a homer, double, walk and was hit by a pitch. MItchell Henry, Lucas Schraad and Paul Enneking each had two hits in the win for Seneca. Corning registered only five hits all singles with Rempe, Buessing, Deters, Adam Kuckelman and Brice Koch each notching a hit in the loss. 

The wins for Seneca improved them to 13-3 on the season and 11-1 in League action, while Corning fell to 2-13 overall and 1-11 in League play. The season rolls along for Seneca on Friday when they host Doniphan County for a big League double header (6:00pm game will be broadcasted on 103.9 KNZA), while Corning continues their season Sunday at home against Oskaloosa.
