Sunday was a full slate of Northeast Kansas League legion baseball with all eight teams in action against each other with three of the four double headers counting as League games. 

Both Sabetha and Atchison hit the road on Sunday and earned a road split with Leavenworth and Seneca, respectively in League action. While, Corning hosted Oskaloosa also in League play and they also played to a split. Doniphan County hosted Silver Lake in the other double header on the day and Doniphan County responded from their first losses of the season with a pair of one-run wins at home. 

Seneca and Atchison Split League Double Header 

It was a a pair of tight ballgames on Sunday when Seneca hosted Atchison in NEKL play with each team snagging a victory. Atchison claimed game one with some late runs to win 6-4, while Seneca took game two using a four-run fifth to win 6-3. 

Atchison took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a walk, hit batter, wild pitch and two singles including an RBI single by Austin Bonnel. Seneca answered with a two-run bottom of the first inning as Tristan Allen reached on an error and a few batters later Kurtis Niehues blasted a two-run home run to tie the game. The lead swung back to Atchison in the second with a run, but again Seneca tied the contest scoring a run in the bottom of the third to make it 3-3. A run in the fifth and two in the seventh gave Atchison a 6-3 advantage going into the bottom of the seventh. Seneca looking to rally got one run across the plate coming with two-outs but the rally stopped their and Atchison earned the 6-4 win. 

James Boatwright was strong on the mound going seven innings giving up four runs on five hits, six walks and struck out six, while Adam Smith helped the Atchison offense going 2-3 with three runs scored. Bonnel added a two hit game with an RBI and run scored. Seneca in the loss had Dylan Schraad toss six and one-third innings giving up six runs on seven hits, four walks and struck out six, while Neil Sudbeck led the offense with a 2-4 game with an RBI. 

Seneca used three singles and a hit batter in the bottom of the second to start the scoring in game two taking a 2-0 early lead. Atchison responded with a two RBI single by Noah Baniewicz and a RBI double by Smith to give Atchison the 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth. Lead jumped back on the other side of the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth as Seneca used two walks, a hit better, single and two RBI double from Sudbeck to score four runs and went on to win 6-3. 

Derek Uphaus earned the win going six innings giving up three runs on seven hits, a walk and struck out four, while Sudbeck again led the Seneca offense going  2-3 with two RBI's and Cody Rottinghaus posted a 2-3 game with two runs scored. Baniewicz took the loss on the mound going five innings giving up six runs on five hits, two walks and eight strikeouts, while Ayden Black went 2-3 for Atchison. 

The split moved Seneca to 16-4 on the season and 14-2 in the League, while Atchison moved to 6-6 overall and 5-5 in the League. Both teams hit the field again on Wednesday, June 29th as Seneca is set to host Silver Lake and Atchison travels to Oskaloosa both in League play. 

Doniphan County Edges Silver Lake In Pair of One Run Games

Looking to bounce back from their first losses of the season Doniphan County hosted Silver Lake on Sunday and it proved to be a pair of tight ballgames going down to the wire with Doniphan claiming 2-1 and 6-5 victories for the sweep. 

Game one saw Doniphan County make the best of two hits in a pitcher's duel to edge Silver Lake 2-1 scoring the go ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Cuttar Huss in the bottom of the sixth plating Wil Smith who reached after being hit by a pitch. Doniphan County held a one-run lead until the top of the sixth when Silver Lake tied the game, but the run in the bottom of the sixth proved to be the difference for Doniphan County. Brody Winder won the duel on the mound for Doniphan County going seven innings giving up one run on two hits, two walks and nine strikeouts, while Kyle Frick took the loss for Silver Lake going six innings surrendering two runs on two hits, two walks and nine strikeouts. 

Doniphan County in game two took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first but Silver Lake snatched the lead in the third with five runs to lead 5-2. Two runs in the third and fourth innings pushed Doniphan County back to the lead and ultimately the 6-5 win. Wyatt Huss led Doniphan on the mound giving up five runs on four hits, four walks and eight strikeouts to earn the win, while Reid Greaser and Chris Winkel each had two hits and Wil Smith had a two-run homer. Silver Lake in the loss had Alex Whitehead on the mound go six innings give up six runs on nine hits with five strikeouts, while Justin Keller had two hits. 

The wins push Doniphan County over the 20 win mark on the season as they improved to 21-2 on the season and Silver Lake fell to 9-11 on the year. Silver Lake continues their season Wednesday at Seneca in League play, while Doniphan County welcomes Falls City to town on Thursday to continue their season. 

Sabetha and Leavenworth Split Pair of Close League Contests

It was two different types of games on Sunday in Leavenworth in low and high scoring but both similar as they were competitive and close contests as Leavenworth hosted Sabetha. Each team finished the night with a win splitting the double header as Leavenworth took game one 5-4 and Sabetha won game two 13-10. 

After a three-run top of the sixth Sabetha held a 4-0 lead going into the bottom half of the inning and Leavenworth broke through for the first time in the contest. A five run bottom of the sixth gave Leavenworth the lead as they scored four of the five runs with two-outs to take the lead and ultimately the game, 5-4. Preston Pfannastial pitched a complete game for Leavenworth to earn the win working around eight hits and nine walks to just give up four runs, as Sabetha stranded 14 runners. Trevor Kramer took the loss for Sabetha going six innings giving up five runs on seven hits. 

An eight run fifth inning in game two put Sabetha in the drive seat of the contest up 13-2 but Leavenworth kept the game alive with four runs in the fifth and scored four more in the seventh but Sabetha held on for the 13-10 win and the double header split. Sabetha pounded out 17 hits in the contest, outhitting Leavenworth 17-9 led by a four hit contest for Preston Bruning, while Joe Gruber had three hits. Hayes Edwards led Leavenworth with three hits in the loss. 

The split puts Sabetha at 17-12 on the season and 8-6 in League action, while Leavenworth moved to 4-20 and 2-14 in League play. The season continues on Wednesday for Sabetha as they travel to Corning, while Leavenworth continues their season on Thursday at home against McLouth. 

Corning and Oskaloosa Play to Split In League Double Header

Just like the rest of the League action on Sunday in Corning it was competitive matchups as Corning hosted Oskaloosa and the teams split their double header. Corning took game one 7-6, while Oskaloosa won game two in six innings 17-8. 

Game one saw Oskaloosa take the early lead after a pair of singles an error by Corning led to a 1-0 Corning lead, but Corning grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first with three hits and a walk scoring three runs. Brenden Melvin had an RBI triple and Dustin Talley registered a two RBI double for Corning in the first for the lead. A solo homer by Kyle Hopkins and RBI single by Hunter Reed pushed two runs across for Oskaloosa in the second and tied the game. Corning jumped back on top with a four run fourth using a Talley three-run homer and Mitchell Kuckelman solo homer. Oskaloosa fought back with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth, but Corning was able to finish out the game to snag the 7-6 win. 

Colton Buessing picked up the win on the mound for Corning going all seven innings, while Talley led the offense with a 3-3 day with five RBI, a double, home run and run scored. Sean Rempe added a 2-4 day with a run scored for Corning. Tyler Moison took the loss on the mound leaving in the third after giving seven runs and being hit by a line drive, Ethan Burghart pitched the final three and two-third innings giving up just two hits, while Jared Miller, Reed, Hopkins and Dalton VanHoutan each had two hits for Oskaloosa in the loss. 

Oskaloosa took an early 2-0 lead in game two and added to that in a big way in the third with eight runs on eight hits and a hit batter. Three of the eight hits were home runs as Burghart had a two-run homer, Reed a three-run homer and VanHoutan a solo shot helping Oskaloosa to a 10-0 lead going into bottom third against Corning. Over the next three innings Corning actually outscored Oskaloosa 8-7 with a five fourth but couldn't overcome the early hole falling in six innings 17-8. 

Seven guys had a multi-hit game for Oskaloosa as a 4-5 game by Mitchell Sullivan led the 19-hit attack by Oskaloosa, as Sullivan had two doubles, a homer, three run scored and three RBI's. Burghart finished 3-5, while Cooper Thurston finished 3-3 with five RBI's and two homers. Corning pounded out 15 hits in the loss with Rempe going 3-4 to lead the way, while Braden Deters and Melvin each had two hits with a homer each.

The split moves Oskaloosa to 7-13 on the season and 5-7 in League play, while Corning moves to 3-14 on the year and 2-12 in League play. Both teams continue their season on Wednesday at home as Oskaloosa hosts Atchison and Corning hosts Sabetha.
