Seneca and Doniphan County Win In Routing Fashion in Zone Play

Night two of the AA legion baseball Zone tournament play in Sabetha proved to be dominated by two teams with a pair of lopsided contests in the first round and Semifinals. Seneca started the night with a 15-0 four inning win over Corning in the first round, while Doniphan County capped the night with an 11-1 four inning win over Silver Lake.

To finish off the first round Seneca squared off with Corning and picked up their 21st win of the season as they struck early with a run in the first to take the initial lead and didn't look back. Seneca added three runs in the third highlighted by a solo home run from Kurtis Niehues, while then batting around again in the fourth and scoring 10 runs in the inning to balloon their lead to 15-0. Corning had scoring opportunities but spoiled them on the night as a runner was caught stealing and another picked off in the first after having two on with nobody out, the bases were left loaded in the second and another runner stranded at third in the third.

Seneca partnered eight hits with seven Corning errors and five walks to secure the 15-0 four inning win as Dylan Schraad earned the win on the mound going four innings giving up no runs on seven hits, a walk and struck out six. Cody Rottinghaus led the offense with a 2-3 night including a two-run homer with a walk, three runs score and three RBI's to earn McDonald's "Player of the Game" on KNZA. While, Niehues went 2-4 with a home run, three runs scored, two RBI's and reached on an error and Neil Sudbeck added two hits. Braden Deters led Corning at the plate in the loss going 2-2 with a double.

In the nightcap a spot in the Zone Championship was up for grabs as Doniphan County took to the field for the first time in Zone play this season against Silver Lake who topped Sabetha in the first round. After an early run by Silver Lake it was all Doniphan County taking the 11-1 win in four innings.

After a one-two-three top of the third defensively Doniphan County put up five more runs in the bottom of the second using three walks, an error and three hits including a two RBI double from Brody Winder. Another run in the third by Doniphan assured Silver Lake would have to score in the top of the fourth to continue the game. Silver Lake managed a base runner via an error but he was ultimately strand at first as the game came to an end with Doniphan County claiming the 11-1 four inning win.

Winder helped guide Doniphan County to the win tossing all four innings for the win giving up one run on two hits with six strikeouts, while going 1-2 at the plate with a double, two RBI's and two runs scored earning him McDonald's "Player of the Game" on KNZA.
