It's been a great for high school football in the Big Seven League and many players have shined this season individually and with their teams. Five of the eight teams in the league made their respective classification playoffs this season and just all-around great seasons.
The All-Big Seven League honors have been handed out with the season drawing near with just a few playoff games left in all the classifications.
Leading the way in all league honors is the only team remaining in the playoffs from the Big Seven, that being the #1 Class 4A team in unbeaten (11-0), Holton. Total of 13 players were all-league and four notch honorable mention for the Wildcats. Holton as used a great defense which as three shutouts on the year and on offense a rushing attack that averages 425 yards per game, to get to where they are as they look to continue on in the playoffs facing McPherson tonight.
It's only fitting that the next few teams of course with the most all-league players all made the playoffs and enjoyed success on the football field tremendously this season. A team that was predicted towards the bottom of the league showed that they were not a team to be taken lightly and made the playoffs and won a playoff game for the first time since 2001. The Hiawatha Redhawks showcased playmakers all over the field and saw seven players earning all-league and three more honorable mention. Redhawks finished 8-3 on the season.
Another team that notched a playoff win in Class 3A was the Sabetha Bluejays as they surprised Riley County in round one after tragedy struck the team with the loss of Mr. Tim Edelman. Sabetha then came within just about one yard of notching two playoff wins but fell to Rossville 28-27 in overtime after the Bluejays two-point conversion fell short. Sabetha finished the year 5-6 but closed out the season on an exceptional high with their emotional play in the playoffs. That great year got the Bluejays five all-league players and three more on the honorable mention list.
Nemaha Valley registered three all-leaguers and four honorable mention honors for a season that was one of their best in quite a long time finishing 7-3 and making a playoff appearance, were they fell to Hiawatha in the first round.
The last team from the Big Seven that made the playoffs was the Jeff West Tigers; Tigers finished 5-5 on the season but made the playoffs by beating fellow Big Seven team, Perry Lecompton in district play to earn a spot in the playoffs. Tigers bowed out in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs but closed out a season of close games with a nice run.
Rounding out the rest of the all-league honors was Royal Valley, Perry Lecompton and Santa Fe Trail. For the Panthers and Kaws they each had one player earn all-league honors, while the Panthers had two honorable mention honors and the Kaws three. The Chargers of Santa Fe Trail finished with three honorable mention players.
