Highland Football Wins Third Game In Row Topping Hutchinson 

Make it three in a row and 4-1 on the season as Highland played host to 13th ranked team in the country in Hutchinson on Saturday picking up the 26-21 win. 

Scotties took the initial lead of the game as Kahlil Render hit Demarre Kitt with a touchdown pass and it was 6-0 Highland at the end of the first quarter. Highland extended the lead in the second quarter on a 32-yard touchdown run by Marquis Terry and with a two-point conversion made it 14-0 going into the half. Things continued to roll in the start of the second half has Ra'Qaunne Dickens busted a 75-yard touchdown run and that made it 20-0 in the third quarter. 

Things changed in the fourth quarter as Hutchinson in a seven minute stretch scored three touchdowns and with all three extra points took a 21-20 lead with 8:53 left in the contest. Highland still down with three minutes left stuck with it and Render hit Bailey Strunk for touchdown pass giving the Scotties the lead back at 26-21 with 2:30 left in the contest. Hutchinson with an opportunity started to mount a drive but Jacob Rominger picked off a Hutchinson pass with 1:17 left and the Scotties held on for their second win over a ranked foe this year. 

Rominger had a pair of interceptions in the game as the Scotties picked off three Hutchinson passes in the contest. 

The puts Highland at 4-1 on the season headed into the bye week next week before traveling to take on Butler on Saturday, October 8th to face another ranked team in the in Grizzles. 

Highland Volleyballl Hits the Road and Earns Two Wins

On Friday the lady Scotties Volleyball team traveled to Fort Dodge, Iowa and picked up a pair of wins against Iowa Central Community College and Dakota County Technical College. 

After losing set one 19-25 to the host Iowa Central, Highland responded with three straight set wins to claim the match win in four sets, winning sets two, three and four with scores of 25-18, 25-22, 25-19. Scotties defense was strong with Megan Rhule notching career high 18 digs while also registering 37 assists and both Josie Vitosh and Shailey Caudle posted 14 and 10 digs each. Tyrecia Lukes tied her career high in kills in the match with 15, while Leslie Polanco had 15 kills and 18 digs. 

To finish the night Highland cruised past Dakota County Technical College winning in three straight sets 25-9, 25-14, 25-11. Stats were balanced all-around for Highland as Caudle and Lukes each had seven kills, while Marianna Falls recorded six, while Rhule had 22 assists. 

The Scotties with the 2-0 night moved to 11-5 on the season and now turn their attention back to KJCC play as they travel to Labette Community College on Monday, September 26th.

The Scotties cross country men's and women's teams continued their season on Friday in Emporia as Emporia State hosted the Papa John's Invitational. 

Highland men continued their strong season by taking sixth place as a team out of 16 schools fielding teams. Leading the way for the Scotties was Jose Jaime who with a time of 26:38.10 placed 17th out of 150 runners. Zekarias Philipo earned a 25th place finish, while John Brunner ran to a 34th place finish. Cole Hinton, Jordan Adams, Brandt Houk, Tristan Hinton, Isaiah Smith and Jackson Beaver all competed for the Scotties placing 78th, 83rd, 88th, 94th, 95th and 104th. 

The lady Scotties as a team took 11th out of 13 teams led by Lakashia Willis who finished 62nd out of 125 runners. Ivanna Uribe and Kaitlyn Slagle took 69th and 71st on the day, while Juliette Rios, Katie Corrigan, Gisel Santiago, Bailey Mistler, Casey Nelson, Stephanie Summerville and Holly Whetstine all raced for Highland finishing 83rd, 89th, 96th, 109th, 110th, 122nd and 123rd. 

Highland cross country team will next compete at Rim Rock Classic in Lawrence on Saturday October 1st for the men, while the women will next compete on October 8th at the Fort Hays Tiger Open.
