Hiawatha Girls & Jackson Heights Boys Win Horton Cross Country Invite

The cross country season continued on Thursday for several Big Seven and Northeast Kansas League teams as Horton played host to a cross country meet. 

The top spots on the day as teams belonged to Jackson Heights boys and Hiawatha girls. The Cobra boys claimed first by 13 points over Rock Creek, while Hiawatha finished in third only six points from second place. McLouth and West Platte took fourth and fifth in the boy’s teams standings, while Sabetha, Kaw Valley, Maur Hill-Mount Academy, Marysville and Valley Falls rounded out the boys team performances in sixth through tenth. 

The Hiawatha girls just edged Kaw Valley for first place on the day winning by two-points, while Cornerstone took third place. Jackson Heights, Rock Creek and Maur Hill placed fourth, fifth and sixth to finish the girls team standings on the day. 

Seven Top 20 runners on the day led Hiawatha with four coming in the girls race helping the lady Red Hawks claim the top spot. Elizabeth Kettler raced to third place with a time of 22:16, while Emma Williams and Mary Rosa joined her in the Top 10 placing sixth and seventh behind times of 23:39 and 23:45. Madison Gilbert grabbed a 16th place finish for Hiawatha. In the boys race Gavin Lierz and Parker Winters raced to Top 10 finishes placing seventh and tenth, respectively with times of 19:57 and 20:26, while Taylor Hughes earned a 19th place finish. 

Leading the Jackson Heights Cobras on the day was the top girl’s time as Faith Little posted a time of 21:45 to win by 15 seconds in the girls race. The Cobra boys on their way to first place as a team had a trio of guys in the Top 20 led by Dalton Chartier who placed sixth with a time of 19:53, while Lane Thomas took 12th and Mark Mavrovich placed 17th. 

McLouth was led by four Top 20 runners at the Horton Invite with a fifth place by Braedan Pfau leading the way (19:51). His teammates, Dakota Driskell and Justin Shufflebarger placed 15th and 20th in the boys race, while in the girls competition Ceara Funk earned a 13th place finish for McLouth. 

Both Sabetha and Maur Hill had a trio of competitors run to Top 20 finishes. The Bluejays had the best area performer in the boy’s race as Keegan Cox earned second place with a time of 19:26, while Henry Glynn finished 11th. In the girl’s competition, Megan Meyer claimed ninth place behind a time of 23:57. 

Maur Hill was led by a pair of Top 10 performances in the boy’s competition as Ayden Black with a time of 19:28 took third place and Isaiah Price placed ninth with a time of 20:15. Grace Seibert in the girl’s competition placed 15th for the Ravens. 

Nemaha Central, ACCHS, Valley Falls and Marysville all had one Top 20 finisher at the Horton Invite. For the Thunder Jordan Peterson posted a finish of 18th in the boys race, while ACCHS had Victoria Caplinger place 11th in the girl’s competition. Valley Falls was led by Justin Myers who placed 16th in the boy’s competition, while Marysville had Max Werner take 14th place in the boys race. 

Doniphan West, Riverside and Horton also competed on the day.
