Sabetha Bluejays Volleyball Sweeps ACCHS On Senior Night

The regular season of high school volleyball wrapped up on Tuesday night and the Sabetha Bluejays on senior night hosted the ACCHS Tigers in Big Seven League action, snagging a pair of wins before Sub-State on Saturday winning 25-21, 25-22 and 23-25, 25-23, 25-22. 

In the first match of the night ACCHS got off to a quick start early as the Tigers worked to a 7-2 lead when Sabetha called an early timeout the Tiger lead grew to as many as seven before Sabetha mounted a run. The Bluejays clawed back to within one at 13-12 but ACCHS held them at bay until the Bluejays manage to the first set at 20-20. The set worked to 21-21 and then the Bluejays finished the set with four-straight points to gain the win 25-21 set one win. Set two saw Sabetha go up 2-0 only to see ACCHS go on another big run with six-straight points but the Bluejays tied the match at 9-9 and it was back and forth until Sabetha went up 20-18. The Tigers down two went on a 4-0 run to take the 22-20 lead late in set two but Sabetha finished the set with the final five points, 25-22 to take the match in straight sets. Lauren Huber was a big part of the Bluejays success on the night with Karlie Spielman and Grace Kuenzi making several plays also, while Katie Beien, Malia Hawk and Jaycee Ernzen helped lead ACCHS.

The second match of the night proved to be just as competitive as the first as it went three sets and down to the wire in each set. A early 5-0 run by Sabetha gave them a 5-1 lead against ACCHS in set one but the Tigers had an answer with a 6-0 of their own to take a 7-5 advantage. The runs continued as the Bluejays countered with a 4-0 run and led 9-7. The teams then traded points back and forth with ACCHS regaining the lead at 19-18 and went on to win the first set 25-23 did the Tigers. Set two was back and forth with both teams establishing leads throughout the set, but ACCHS led 20-18 late in the set only to see the action worked to a 22-22 tie and the Bluejays pushed the match to a end set with a 25-23 set two win. The third set was tied multiple times early but ACCHS took 15-11 lead, leading to a Sabetha timeout. Out of the timeout the Bluejays rattled off a 6-0 run to take the lead and used that to hold off ACCHS for the third set win 25-22 to take the match and complete the sweep on the night. Bluejays used strong serving by Cassidy Holthaus in the contest along with plays upfront from Huber and Ellie Meyer, while ACCHS was led by Jayden McNerny with several kills and blocks.

Sabetha with the wins wrapped up the regular season 10-25 overall and 6-10 in the Big Seven, while ACCHS moved to 8-23 on the year and 3-13 in the Big Seven. Both teams now turn their attention to Class 3A Sub-State play on Saturday as Sabetha hosts the Sub-State involving both teams.
