Unfinished business that’s what stood in front of the Troy Trojans in Hays on Saturday at the 2-1A State Championship stemming from coming up just short in the year before but this time the Trojans changed their fortune and etched their game in the Kansas high school football history books as State Champions. The Trojans finished out the contest holding off the Plainville Cardinals caging the birds in big spots to earn the 28-24 win.

After a three-out for the Troy offense to start the game Plainville got the offense going early hitting the Trojans for some big gains including a 56-yard run by Hayden Friend on the first offense play for the Cardinals and capped the drive with a two-yard run by Riley Nyp to take a 7-0 lead with 8:22 left in the first quarter. Troy answered in a big play on their next offensive play as Reid Greaser aired it out to Cuttar Huss for a big play of 71-yards as Huss used his speed to get most of the yards after the catch and tied the game at 7-7. The clock churned down in the first quarter and Troy hit another big play in the passing game as Winder caught 61-yard pass from Greaser and the Trojans took the 14-7 with 13 seconds left in the first quarter. Plainville had an answer as a line drive kickoff was scooped by Friend and returned 69-yards to tie the game at 14-14 just before the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter both teams had opportunities but each team’s defense spoiled their foes chances, expect a 27-yard field goal that Tanner Copeland hit after a 14-play drive that took over five minutes for Plainville to give the Cardinals a 17-14 lead and they took that into the half. Troy had an interception in the endzone in that spoiled a potential scoring drive before the half.

Troy defense continued to get better throughout the game making plays when the team needed it and the Trojan offense struck first in the second half as Greaser tossed his third of four touchdown passes hitting Tyler Franken for a 30-yard score making it 21-17 with 7:41 left in the third quarter. The drive covered 81-yards in 1:35 for Troy to gain the lead. Plainville answered on the next drive with a 10-play drive going 70-yards in 3:40 to swing the gain back in their favor on the scoreboard going up 24-21 after a Nyp three-yard touchdown run.

Trojans got the ball back on the next drive and all they did on the first few plays moved backwards with penalty and sack, ultimately setting up a third and 36 and what came next is a play that will live in Troy history forever as Greaser tossed a Hail Mary style pass and Huss tipped the ball to a streaking Winder who was close by and Winder was gone to the house for the score on an improbable conversion making it 28-24.

The fourth quarter proved to be the time the Troy Trojans defense stepped up even more as they buckled down and held the Cardinals out of the endzone on a fourth and goal at the two-yard line after the Trojans had thrown their second interception of the game. Then having to punt deep in their own territory Troy’s defense came up with another fourth down stop in their territory to get the ball back with 4:47 left in the contest. Looking to run out the clock the Trojans needed a few first down conversion and they would get them with the biggest coming on a third and long pass that Huss won at the high point while being double covered and help the Trojans finish out the game to gain the 28-24 win and their first football State title in school history.

Troy finished the contest with 445 yards of total offense with Greaser going 14-21 for 374 yards and four touchdowns notching a season high in yards passing. Winder snagged a season high in receiving yards with 207 yards on five catches with two touchdowns, while Huss caught six passes for 121 yards with a touchdown. On the year the Troy offense finished with over 5,000 yards. Defensively the Trojans finished the game with eight guys with six or more tackles. Kortin Blevins and Cuttar Huss each registered 11 tackles, while Wyatt Huss had nine tackles and Wil Smith and Jarren Frump each had six tackles both with two tackles for loss and Smith added two sacks.

Plainville registered 369 yards of total offense with Friend running for 109 yards on 13 carries and passing for 175 yards on 16-29, while Nyp ran for 85 yards on 26 carries with two touchdowns. Justin Reif caught seven passes for 70 yards for the Cardinals who finished the season 11-2 and State runner-up.

Trojans Head Coach Derek Jasper picked up his 40th win and 10th in the playoffs in four years coming up to the high school level with his group of 13 seniors (Reid Greaser, Connor McNorton, Tyler Franken, Alex Martinez, Brody Winder, Jarren Frump, Cuttar Huss, Kortin Blevins, Brandon Schofield, Wyatt Huss, Jason Berry, Wil Smith and Brant Hamilton) four years ago.

The Trojans capped their storybook season 13-0 and finished their unfinished business from the previous season claiming the 2-1A State title to win the first football state title in school history.
