Battle of Wildcats in 4A Sub State Holton at Mulvane
By Justin Fluke

It’s a battle of Wildcats in the Class 4A West semifinal as #1 Holton travels to play #4 Mulvane in the first meeting between the schools in football. Holton has been top ranked all year and proven it with wins against #3 Collegiate (28-0) and #2 McPherson last week in a wild 31-27 game that included six lead changes, and a Holton 65-yard touchdown pass with one-minute remaining for the win. That was Holton’s closest game of the year, (27-0 win vs. Hayden) and the only time the Cats trailed beyond the first quarter.

Mulvane, meanwhile, pitched their second straight impressive shutout by knocking off Buhler (15-0) for the second time this year. Mulvane has also beaten Rose Hill twice and knocked the defending 4A champs out of the post-season with a 37-14 win. Those 14 points are the only ones allowed in the past four Mulvane wins (three shutouts) while the only Wildcat loss was 35-30 against McPherson in week six of the regular season.

After losing in the Sectional round the past two years, this 2012 season is the best in Mulvane history, as they look to earn an initial trip to a state football championship under 21st year Head Coach David Fennewald. The Wildcats are led by 19 seniors, which account for 16 of their 22 starting spots and only have a pair of two-way-athletes. Quarterback, Ty Redington is the leader who has thrown over 300 passes for 2,568 yards and 25 touchdowns while adding 608 yards rushing and 9 more scores. Tight-end Alex Evans is the leading target with 87 catches for 1,495 yards and 13 TDs while Nolan Smith has 51 grabs for 614. Mulvane is averaging 32 points per game and gets 228 of their 400 yards per outing through the air, where they are re-writing all the passing and receiving single season and career record books in 2012.

Holton, on the other hand, has a mean of 412 rushing yards per contests in the wishbone attack and is scoring 48 points on average. Drake Ewing paves the way with 150 carries for 1,285 while Cameron Karn soared past the 1,000 yard mark (140-1,079) with a team-high 110 yard effort against McPherson last week. Trent Tanking and Chase Wilson are each over 425 yards on the ground as well as Jaxon Wright who has 573 rushing to go with 412 yards passing. Holton is up to 4,839 total yards rushing for the year with an average of 7.7 yards per carry and 68 touchdowns on the ground. The Wildcat defense has pitched a trio of shutouts themselves, forced 31 turnovers, and are plus 23 in the takeaway department led by Trent Tanking with 142 tackles.

Holton is hoping to get back to the 4A title game for the second time in three years and has won championships in 2003 and 2005. The winner of Holton at Mulvane Friday night at 7:00 PM will face the winner of Eudora vs. KC Piper on Saturday, November 24th in Salina.
