2017 TVL Basketball Tournament -- Semifinals, Consolation Semifinals & More

The 2017 Twin Valley League tournament continued on Friday with the consolation games, consolation Semifinals and Semifinal action at Washington County hgih school. Friday's action is recapped below.

Girls 

#5 Wetmore vs. #1 Centralia -- Centralia won 48-30 

For three quarter's it was a tight contest with Centralia just holding off Wetmore to lead most of the game in the first three frames, but the fourth quarter belong entirely to the Panthers as they outscored Wetmore 16-4 to cash in on a 48-30 win and earn a spot in the tournament Championship game. Centralia got off to a solid start but Wetmore took an 8-7 lead with 2:28 in the first quarter only to see the Panthers finish the first on a 4-0 run to lead 12-8. The lead moved to 26-19 by halftime and was a high as eight in the first half for Centralia. Wetmore fought back with a six point third quarter by McKayla Henry and kept it close heading into the fourth but the Panthers finished the game with a 16-4 fourth led by Cassidy Haufler who netted eight of her 17 in the frame and Centralia took the win and Haufler the Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. The win is the 33rd straight victory for the Panthers and they will look to defend their TVL tourney title from last year. The loss puts Wetmore at 6-4 on the season as they were led by Henry who scored a new season 14 points. 

#3 Washington County vs. #2 Hanover -- Washington County won 57-52

Despite a fast start by Hanover to the tune of a 14-4 first quarter it was the Washington County Tigers getting the win in the Semifinals to earn a spot in the Championship game of the tournament with a 57-52 win. Washington County responded from the first quarter by posting an 18-2 second quarter and going into the half up 22-16 and in the second half made that lead standup keeping Hanover at arms distance to snag the victory. Tess Cecrle had a monster game posting 24 points to lead Washington County, Jenna Hennerberg scored 10 points and the Tigers finished the night 13-18 from the line to move to 9-1 on the year. The loss sends Hanover to 7-2 on the season as Macy Doebele led by them with 15 points and Tianna Loshe scored 12 points.

#8 Doniphan West vs. #4 Linn -- Linn won 40-39 

It was a back and forth contest throughout the game between Doniphan West and Linn in the girls Consolation Semifinals and ultimately Linn secured the win making some plays late to grab the 40-39 win. Linn worked to a 13-9 lead after the first quarter but Doniphan West answered with a 15-9 second quarter to carry a two-point lead into the half. Mustang clung to the lead going into the fourth by just one but in the end Linn behind 16 points from Shelby Ohlde picked up the victory. The Bulldogs improved to 7-3 on the season, while Doniphan West fell to 4-7 on the year and was led by 15 points from Carlie Taylor and 12 points from Calli Caudle. 

#7 Frankfort vs. #6 Clifton-Clyde -- Frankfort won 56-27 

After a pair of tight ballgames in their first two tournament games in which Frankfort split the Wildcats pounced on Clifton-Clyde early in the Consolation Semifinals and cruised to a 56-27 win. Frankfort led 19-10 after the first quarter and then used a 20-6 second quarter to take firm control of the game and earn the win. Emilee Ebert once again led Frankfort scoring 17 points in the victory, while Rebecca Adams netted 11 points and Frankfort moved to 7-5 on the season. Clifton-Clyde with the loss fell to 7-6 on the year and was led by Baylie Bowser who posted a nine point. 

#13 Onaga vs. #12 Axtell -- Axtell won 54-32

The Axtell Eagles came flying out of the gate in the consolation game over Onaga getting up 21-6 after just one quarter of play used that to push themselves to their second win of the season, winning 54-32. The tandem of Anna Buessing and Trisha Mathewson led the way for Axtell scoring 19 and 16 points, respectively in the win helping Axtell move to 2-8 on the year. While, Onaga fell to 0-12 this season and wrapped up the TVL Tournament with a 0-3 mark in tourney play as 17 points from Shay Duer led them in the loss to Axtell.

Boys

#5 Doniphan West vs. #1 Troy -- Troy won 68-57

The Troy Trojans have played with great pace all year and ran past opponents with their athleticism and in the Semifinals a fast start is what propelled them past Doniphan West to the 68-57 win but the Mustangs hung tough throughout. Cuttar Huss put on a scoring show for the Trojans especially early with 16 of the team’s first 21 points including a dunk in the first quarter, but Doniphan West hit some outside shots and it was 21-13 after one. The lead grew to 13 by halftime but never really went above that margin in the game as Doniphan West strung little runs together to get as close as seven in the second half but Troy kept them at a distance and earned the win. The Trojans with the win move into the Championship game for the second straight year as they look to win the Tournament for the second straight season and are now 8-0 on the year. Huss led the Trojans with 28 points and was named Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA, while Wil Smith added 14 points and Reid Greaser tallied 10. Doniphan West with the loss moved to 7-4 on the season and was led by Levi Watts who scored 23 points, while Newt Smith had a new season high 15 points and Devin Taylor tallied 15 points. 

#3 Onaga vs. #2 Hanover -- Hanover won 54-45

Onaga opened up the Semifinals with a 5-0 run in the first 1:40 and were up 13-2 in the first quarter over Hanover but the Wildcats stayed the course and trailed just 16-10 after one. The lead changes in the second when Hanover took their first lead at 17-16 with just under three minutes left in the first half and went into the half up 22-18. In the second half Hanover held Onaga at bay pushing the lead to double figures and after that point the Buffaloes would get as close as seven points and fell to Hanover 54-45. The win puts Hanover in the Championship game of the Tournament and moves them to 7-2 on the year while Will Bruna led the team with 20 points in the game and was named Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Michael Jueneman added 14 points for Hanover in the victory. Onaga in the loss fell to 7-4 and were led by Tanner Marten who scored 13 points. 

#10 Clifton-Clyde vs. #6 Washington County -- Clifton-Clyde won 58-55

For the second time in the TVL Tournament Clifton-Clyde boys as a lower seed topped a higher seed taking a 58-55 win over Washington County in the Consolation Semifinals. The Tigers led early up 21-16 after the first quarter and 35-32 at intermission but behind a 17-11 fourth quarter the Eagles earned the win. A trio of double figure scores led Clifton-Clyde as Matt Barnes posted 11 points and both Zach Sorell and Bradley Koch each netted 10 points as the Eagles improved to 5-8 on the year. Washington County fell to 6-5 on the season and were led by Levi Gauby who scored 11 points and Jerrod Hoover who finished with 10 points. 

#8 Centralia vs. #4 Valley Heights -- Valley Heights won 52-45

Each looking to bounce back from a Quarterfinals loss Centralia and Valley Heights squared off in the Consolation Semifinals and the Mustangs behind a 23-32 night from the line and a trio of guys in double figures earned the win 52-45 win. Both teams offensively started the game slow and Valley Heights led 18-13 at half but the offense picked up in the second half the lead grew for the Mustangs in the third and despite Centralia cutting into the lead in the fourth Valley Heights took the win. A 20 points ball game by Harrison Blaske led Valley Heights, while Bryan Yungeberg added 16 points as the two guys went 8-14 and 7-10 from the line individually and Logan Woodyard scored 10 points. Valley Heights with the win is now 7-4, while Centralia fell to 5-6 and was led by Alec Duryea with 15 points and Bryson Johnson who scored 12 points. 

#13 Axtell vs. #9 Frankfort -- Axtell won 49-38 

After picking up their first win of the season the Axtell boys wrapped up the TVL Tournament by getting another win picking up the 49-38 win over Frankfort. The Eagles led 13-9 after the first quarter and used an 11-5 second quarter to take ahold of the game but had to fend off Frankfort throughout the second half to secure the win. The win moves Axtell to 2-9 on the season and wraps up the tournament for them with a 2-1 mark in TVL tourney play. Quinn Buessing notched a 19 point night to lead the Eagles, while Jonah Porting scored 17 points. Frankfort with the loss fell to 4-7 on the year and was led by a trio of guys who had eight points in Mitchell Olson, Jedd Rose and Adam Kenworthy.
