Ten Area Schools Sending Wrestlers to 3-2-1A State Tournament - Marysville Dominates Regionals

It's been a strong season for several area wrestlers and over the weekend spots at the Class 3-2-1A State tournament was up for grabs and 30 area wrestlers secured a spot at the State competition by finishing in the Top four at Regionals. 

The Marysville Bulldogs dominated the competition at the Wabaunsee 3-2-1A Regionals by claiming the Regional title with 244 total points and 10 wrestlers qualifying for State. The Bulldogs were led by six Regional champs helping them take first out of 22 schools. Sabetha Bluejays behind a Regional champion placed second as a team with 116.5 total points, while Riverside tied for fourth as a team with 97 points. A pair of Big Seven League schools took seventh and eighth as teams with Royal Valley and Perry Lecompton registering those finishes, respectively. The rest of the area teams finished: 15th - Pleasant Ridge, 16th - Oskaloosa, 18th - Hiawatha, 19th - Doniphan West, 20th - Onaga, 21st - Maur Hill-Mount Academy and 22nd - Immaculata. 

On the way to the Regional title as a team Marysville qualified 10 wrestlers for the State tournament as six of those grapplers earned individual Regional titles. Joey Bockin (113lbs), Storm Slupianek (152lbs), Jacob Mintzmyer (170lbs), Jacob Stryker (182lbs), Nick Ackerman (195lbs) and Seth Mooradian (285lbs) all wrestled to unbeaten marks at Regionals to win their weight classes. Bockin went 3-0 getting a first round bye, then winning by pinfall in the next three matches in 1:08, 2:00 and 3:26 in the Championship bout at 113lbs. It was a 4-0 Regional for Slupianek at 152lbs to take first winning the first two matches by pin in 1:07 and 26 seconds and in the Semifinals won by 9-1 major decision and finished with a 6-4 sudden victory in the Championship match. Mintzmyer continued his strong year by taking the Regional title at 170lbs going 4-0 with three pinfall wins in 17 seconds, 1:19 and 2:46 and won his Championship contest by 8-3 decision. Stryker recorded a 3-0 day to take first at 182lbs getting a first round bye, then won by pinfall in 45 seconds and 4:55 and in the Championship match won a tight 7-6 decision. Ackerman also grabbed a Regional title as he went 4-0 at 195lbs winning his first three matches by pin in 24 seconds, 51 seconds and 1:34 before finishing Regionals off with a 3-1 decision in the Champoinship match. Mooradian went 4-0 at 285lbs to take first winning his first two matches by pinfall in 1:03 and 4:34, while then winning via a 5-3 decision and taking the Championship bout victory by a 5-4 decision.

Four other guys Marysville Bulldogs had Top four finishes at Regionals. Jakob Snellings (106lbs) and Jonny Crome (120lbs) each snagged second place going 2-1 and 3-1, respectively. Snellings registered two pinfall wins, while Crome had three pinfall victories. Both Gabe Capp (138lbs) and Derek Roever (145lbs) each finished fourth place both going 3-2 at Regionals. 

Sabetha Bluejays were led by Seth Harrell who claimed the Regional title at 126lbs going 4-0 on the day. Harrell won his first match by pinfall in just 24 seconds, then won in the Quarterfinals by technical fall (15-0) and in the Semifinals picked up a 8-3 sudden victory. In the Championship bout Harrell won a tight 4-3 decision. Three other Bluejays are headed to State also after third place finishes as Cauy Rokey (182lbs), Brendan Rokey (195lbs) and Elliot Strahm (285lbs) each posted 4-1 records to take third. 

Three wrestlers qualified for the State tournament for the Riverside Cyclones with Regional title by Donovan Duncan at 220lbs leading the performances. Duncan posted a 3-0 record getting a first round bye, then won by pin in 1:22, picked up a 2-1 decision in the Semifinals and won the Championship bout by a TB 5-3 decision. A second place finish was earned by Scott Resler at 145lbs as he went 2-1 with his wins coming via decision and Kinstin Juhl also qualified for State taking third at 152lbs going 5-2 in matches at Regionals. 

Royal Valley Panthers are sending four grapplers to State after two second place finishes along with a third and fourth place at Regionals. Jacob Box (195lbs) and Blake Garrison (220lbs) each took second place going 2-1 on the mats as Box recorded a pair of pinfall wins and Garrison had a major decision win and pinfall victory. Brett House took third at 132lbs for Royal Valley going 3-1 in action, while Dalton Ware is also headed to State after placing fourth at 120lbs going 2-2 on the mats. 

A trio of Perry Lecompton Kaws are headed to the State tournament after Top four finishes at Regionals. Torin Van Nest led the Kaws going 3-1 to take second place at 152lbs notching wins by technical fall twice and also via a 5-0 decision. Braden Woodson (106lbs) and Dalton Kahle (113lbs) will join Van Nest at State after placing third and fourth, respectively at the Wabaunsee Regional. Woodson posed a 3-1 record on the mats, while Kahle finished 2-2 in action. 

ACCHS Tigers were led by another Regional championship for Hunter Ostertag who went 4-0 to claim the Regional title at 138lbs and head back to State. Ostertag won his first round match by pinfall in 42 seconds, while then winning in the Quarterfinals by pin again this time in 40 seconds. In the Semifinals, Ostertag won by a 6-5 decision and then finished Regionals off with a 8-0 major decision win in the Championship bout. Ryan Hanshaw is also headed to State for ACCHS after going 2-2 and taking fourth at 220lbs. 

Hiawatha, Doniphan West, Oskaloosa and Pleasant Ridge all will have one wrestler at the State tournament. A third place finish was earned by Hiawatha Red Hawk, Keenan Hinton as he recorded a 3-1 record on the mats at 220lbs. Doniphan West Mustang, Houston Idol heads to State after going 3-2 at 106lbs to take fourth, while Oskaloosa Bear, Jared Miller went 2-2 and finished fourth at 182lbs and Luke Oatney of Pleasant Ridge earned fourth place at 132lbs after going 3-2 in action.

The 29 area wrestlers from the 10 area schools now turn their attention to the 3-2-1A State tournament set for February 24th and 25th in Hays at Gross Memorial Coliseum on the campus of Fort Hays State University.
