Valley Heights Girls & Centralia Boys Take First at Valley Heights Track Invite

Four Twin Valley League teams competed against each other on Thursday in track action as Valley Heights played host to Centralia, Axtell and Wetmore. 

In the girls competition it was the host Valley Heights claiming the top team spot with 129 points, while Centralia took second and Axtell and Wetmore finished third and fourth. For the boy’s side of action Centralia with 116 points took first place, while Valley Heights nabbed second and Axtell and Wetmore finished third and fourth, respectively. 

The host Valley Heights led the day with 16 event wins between the girls and boys competitions and Kayla Smith continues to have a strong track season claiming four more gold medals. Smith sprinted to the win in the 100 and 200 meter dashes with times of 12.84 and 26.65, while recording leaps of 38'01.50 and 17'03.75 to earn the gold in the triple and long jumps. Sam Vermetten once more won a pair of events for the Mustangs claiming first in the 400 meter dash (1:01.45) and also stepped up and competing in the 3200 meter run won it too posting a time of 12:10.71. With tosses of 35'03 and 119'06, Shelby Vermetten took first in the shot put and discus for the lady Mustangs, while Skyler Saunders won the high jump (5'04) and Andrea Hudson took first in the 300 meter hurdles (58.79). The lady Mustangs 4x800 meter relay team also earned first after racing to a time of 10:56.42. 

Valley Heights boys had four of their five event wins come on the track as the 4x400 (3:46.73) and 4x800 (8:59.11) meter relay teams took first along with Alex Hardin winning the 400 meter dash (54.41) and Jeremy Reed placing first in the 800 meter run (2:11.05). In the field events Logan Woodyard won the triple jump (40'04.50). 

Centralia Panthers saw nine first place performances posted by their athletes on the day with five from the boys to help them take first place as a team. Dylan Boeckman raced to the 300 meter hurdles win with a time of 42.95 and the boy’s 4x100 meter relay (48.53) also earned first place. In the field events Stephan LeBlanc, Daegan Steinlage and Josh Hasenkamp each won an event posting the top marks in the pole vault (13'09), discus (123'04) and javelin (152'02), respectively. Lady Panthers won two of the three relays earning first place in the 4x100 (53.83) and the 4x400 (4:28.44), while Breanna Schmitz won the pole vault (10'06) and Madison Lueger won the javelin (125'11). 

Burke Deters led the Axtell Eagles as he raced to times of 4:45.46 and 10:14.70 to finish first place in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Also winning events for the Axtell boys were Hunter Koch and Tristan DeKoning who claimed first in the 100 meter dash (12.22) and high jump (5'04), respectively. Olivia Kuckelman and Chelsea Smith each won an event for the lady Eagles taking first in the 1600 meter run (5:56.18) and 800 meter run (2:44.85). 

Leading the way for the Wetmore Cardinals was the performance of Curtis Bloom who won the boys 200 meter dash (24.89) and long jump (19'00.50), while Trenton Rowland took first in the shot put (44'10.50) and Savannah Bryant placed first in the girl’s 100 meter hurdles (19.49).
