Hiawatha & Immaculata Boys Tennis Athletes Earn Spots at State

The final month of the school year is upon us and with that it means postseason time for spring sports and boy's tennis got the postseason rolling last week with Regionals and both Hiawatha and Immaculata will be sending athletes to the State competition. 

Competing at the Class 3-2-1A Regional in Lawrence hosted by Bishop Seabury both Hiawatha and Immaculata registered Top six finishes which earns a spot at State. 

In Singles competition both Joseph Kunkel and Kyle Tollefson are headed to the 3-2-1A State competition after finishing fourth and fifth at Regionals, respectively. Kunkel opened up Regionals winning his first two matches winning 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and in the Quarterfinals earning a 6-0, 6-4 win to make the Semifinals assuring a spot at State. In the Semifinals Kunkel fell 0-6, 0-6 to the eventual Regional Champ moving him into the third place match were he finished the day with a 0-6, 0-6 going 2-2 in action and taking fourth. For Tollefson he earned a first round 6-2, 6-4 win but fell in the Quarterfinals 1-6, 3-6 moving into the elimination bracket. Kyle bounced back and won his next two matches including the fifth place match taking the win 6-2, 6-2 to finish the day 3-1 and fifth place. Kunkel heads into State with a 17-5 record on the season, while Tollefson is 21-4. 

Immaculata was led by the doubles team of Ben Lee and Michael Hollingsworth as they earned fourth place to punch at ticket to the 3-2-1A State competition. Lee and Hollingsworth opened Regionals with two wins and earned a spot in the Semifinals giving them a spot at State. The Raider duo finished the day with a pair of tough losses going 2-2 and taking fourth. The tandem of Lee and Hollingsworth head into State with a 6-7 record as a team. 

Marysville tennis athletes were also in action at the 3-2-1A Regional at Bishop Seabury, while Atchison tennis athletes competed at the Class 4A Hayden Regional. 

Hiawatha and Immaculata State qualify athletes now gear up for the 3-2-1A State competition in Garden City on May 12th and 13th.
