Sabetha, Nemaha Central & Frankfort Boys Golf Lead Area State Qualifiers

Bids to the boy’s golf State tournaments were up for grabs on Monday across the State as Regional golf action took place and area teams and golfers in the links in hopes of earning a spot at State and many accomplished that feat. 

Leading the way for the area was Class 3A as Sabetha hosted the Regional involving all Class 3A area teams and it was the Bluejays themselves earning the Regional title to qualify for State as a team. Posting a 326 team score the Bluejays earned the Regional title and was led by an individual Regional champion in Jesee Burger who shot a 79 to take first place. The Bluejays overall had six of the Top eight individual finishes on the day. David Pierson with an 80 earned second place, while Reese Lierz and Garrett Scott tied for third and placed fifth with 83 and 84 scores, respectively. Brendan Rokey and Noah Garber notched sixth and tied for eighth performances with rounds of 87 and 96, respectively. 

Nemaha Central Thunder golf team also qualified for 3A State finishing second place as a team with a team score of 381. Dylan Enneking paced the Thunder tying for third place with 83, while Cory Nolte earned seventh place with a 95 and Dalton Schmelzle tied for 10th after shooting a 97. Both Corey Heiman and Billy Mitchell were also in action for Nemaha and finished tied for 13th and tied for 23rd. 

Royal Valley, Hiawatha, Maur Hill-Mount Academy and Horton are all sending individual golfers to the Class 3A State tournament. Corey Humpert of Royal Valley with a 96 to finish tied for eighth qualified for State, while Tom Nolte of Hiawatha shot a 97 to tie for tenth and earn a spot at State. Isaac Henderson and Nolan Dulac of Maur Hill placed 12th and tied for 13th with rounds of 100 and 106 to earn State spots and Cameron Smith of Horton shot a 107 to place 15th and qualify for State. 

Class 1A features several area golfers headed to State also and the area performances were led by the host of the Regional involving area teams as the Frankfort Wildcats who hosted the area 1A Regional won the Regional title with a 390 team score winning by 22 strokes. Leading Frankfort was Austin Hardwick who placed fourth shooting a 90, while Branden Bussmann and Brandon Anderson each placed eighth and tenth carding rounds of 98 and 99, respectively. Spencer Dressman, Adam Kenworthy and Josh Tynon all also were in action for the Wildcats finishing 15th, 16th and tied for 17th. 

Immaculata golf team also is headed to State after a third place team finish posting a team score of 417. Evan Wheaton led the Raiders by winning the Regional title shooting an 82 to win by four strokes. Zachary Schwinn placed 11th for the Raiders, while Cade Clemens, Ben Vardimann, Matthew Colene and Emma Bollin all were in action for the Raiders, also. 

Centralia Panther, Jason Gore and Linn Bulldogs, Chase McGatlin and Andrew Meyer each qualified for State individually in Class 1A. Gore finished second after shooting an 86, while McGatlin and Meyer posted rounds of 89 and 92 to place third and sixth, respectively. 

A trio of Big Seven League golfers are headed to State in Class 4A in boys golf after qualifying individually. At the Clay Center Regional Holton Wildcat, AJ Haussler shot a 74 to place sixth and earn a spot at State. While at the Jeff West Regional a pair of Tigers in Cooper Mickens and Preston Stanley placed second and ninth with rounds of 79 and 84 to earn a spot at State. 

Class 2A will feature a pair of Twin Valley League golfers at the State competition as both Evan Ouellette of Washington County and Bryan Yungeberg of Valley Heights each qualified for State. Ouellette finished 12th with a 83 on the links at the 2A Regional hosted by Salina-Sacred Heart, while Yungeberg shot a 91 to finish 15th. 

State boy’s golf is set for Monday, May 22nd across the State as Class 4A will tee it up at the Wamego Country Club in Wamego, while Class 3A competition will take place in Independence at the Independence Country Club. Class 2A will hit the links in Garden City at the Golf Club at Southwind and Class 1A State competition will be held in Goodland at Sugar Hills Golf Course.
