The league portion of the legion baseball season is underway in the Northeast Kansas League getting going on Tuesday with a pair of League doubleheaders. 

Doniphan County earned the road sweep of Oskaloosa winning 12-7 and 3-0, while Sabetha split with Silver Lake at Somerset Park as Silver Lake took game one 7-6 in nine innings and Sabetha won game two 3-2. 

Doniphan County Starts Legion Season with Pair of Wins Over Oskaloosa

It was a tale of two different games on Tuesday between Doniphan County and Oskaloosa but the outcome was the same in each as Doniphan County earned the sweep with 12-7 and 3-0 wins. 

Game one saw some offense as Doniphan County plated three runs in the first inning only to see Oskaloosa answer with a three run bottom of the first. Doniphan County regained the lead for good with a three run third inning and kept the lead the rest of the way, as Oskaloosa scored three runs in the seventh to make the final margin closer as a Hunter Reed walk and Dawson Gatzemeyer single helped score the three runs. Zeb Speer pitched six strong innings for the win on the mound for Doniphan County giving up four runs but only one earned, while also going 2-4 with an RBI at the plate. Adding to the offense Wil Smith was 3-5 with four runs scored and five RBI's, while Brody Winder was 4-5 with three runs scored and Tyler Franken went 2-4 with three runs scored. Seth Coltrane took the loss on the mound for Oskaloosa surrendering seven runs on five hits and two strikeouts in three innings. 

Game two featured only three runs scored in the contest as the matchup was a pitching duel between Winder and Reed. Doniphan County backed Winder's pitching performance with three runs to earn the 3-0 win as Winder went all five innings giving up just one-hit and struck out 11. While, Reed in the loss gave up three runs on four hits with four strikeouts in three innings. Offensively, Franken had a hit and two RBI's and Reid Greaser added a hit and two walks for Doniphan County. 

The two wins open the legion season for Doniphan County 2-0, while Oskaloosa starts the season 0-2. Oskaloosa hits the diamond again on Thursday for a League doubleheader at Leavenworth, while Doniphan County gears up for the League tournament on Saturday in Sabetha. 

Sabetha and Silver Lake Split Tight One-Run Games

The League portion of the legion baseball season opened with a pair of tight ballgames for Sabetha and Silver Lake on Tuesday as the teams split their doubleheader. Silver Lake earned a 7-6 nine inning win, while Sabetha earned a 3-2 win. 

Silver Lake got rolling early in game one with five runs in the third inning with a bases loaded two-run double by Reid Walker highlighting the frame, while Justin Keller and Garret Huske each added RBI singles. Sabetha answered with three runs in the bottom of the third, but Silver Lake added a tally in the fifth to lead 6-3. With three runs in the bottom of the seventh Sabetha tied the game and forced extras as a Trevor Kramer RBI triple and a Seth Burdick RBI single highlighted the inning. Silver Lake scored the ultimate winning run on a sacrifice fly from Huske in the top of the ninth and secured the 7-6 win. Jake Lindstrom went six innings as the starter giving up just three runs and struck out 12, while Walker earned the save for Silver Lake. Kyle Grimm gave Sabetha a solid six and two-thirds inning of relief giving up just four hits but took the loss, while offensively Blake Frey, Brayden Becker, Brett Stallbaumer, Kramer and Burdick each had two hits for Sabetha. 

Game two saw a pitching duel between Joe Gruber and Kyle Frick and it was Gruber and Sabetha earning the 3-2 win. Sabetha up 1-0 early saw Silver Lake score a pair of runs in the second to take the lead but two runs in the fourth gave Sabetha the lead back and ultimately the win. Gruber earned the win on the mound going five innings giving up one earned run, while Stallbaumer recorded to two of the three Sabetha hits. In the loss Silver Lake had Frick go four innings giving up three runs on three hits with five strikeouts, while Keller had a pair of hits offensively. 

The split starts the season for Silver Lake with a 1-1 mark, while Sabetha moved to 2-1 on the season. Both teams hit the field again on Thursday as Silver Lake plays host to Seneca and Sabetha will host Corning for League action.
