A trio of Northeast Kansas League legion baseball doubleheaders were slated for Thursday, June 1st but only one doubleheader happened as the other two were washed out due to rain.

Sabetha hosted Corning earning the sweep with 9-1 and 5-0 wins, while the Seneca at Silver Lake and Oskaloosa at Leavenworth games were postponed.

Sabetha Continues Strong Start to Season Sweeping Corning

Sabetha stymied Corning all night in the season opening action for Corning as Sabetha picked up the 9-1 and 5-0 victories.

The headline of game one was the play of Brayden Becker who tossed a six inning no-hitter facing only one batter over the minimum while only needing 80 pitches and registered 11 strikeouts in the process of the win for Sabetha. A run in the first inning off a Seth Burdick double got Sabetha on the board first and then lead 2-0 when Corning manufactured their lone run of the game. Using a walk, stolen base, groundout and sacrifice fly Corning posted a tally on the board but Sabetha broken things open in the bottom of the sixth leading 3-1 at that point but scoring the rest of the runs on four Corning errors to ultimate win 9-1. Burdick had a multi-hit game with three RBI's for Sabetha. Corning had a tough contest registering no hits, but Kamble Haverkamp got an RBI in the contest as Braden Deters scored after drawing a walk in the game; six errors also hurt Corning in the loss.

Game two was much of the same storyline of game one as Sabetha pitching held down Corning helping guide them to a 5-0 win. Mason Spellmeier tossed four scoreless innings allowing just one-hit, while Blake Frey threw the final inning striking out two. Becker notched a sac-fly to score the initial run of the game and Sabetha added on three runs in the third with one more in the fourth. Brett Stallbaumer had a pair of hits and runs scored, while Becker recorded two RBI's. In the loss Jackson Glessner tossed four innings giving up five runs on five hits, five walks with four strikeouts, while Cooper Deters logged the only hit for Corning.

The wins push Sabetha to 4-1 on the season and Corning opens their season 0-2. Both teams will be in action at Somerset Park in Sabetha over the weekend as part of the Northeast Kansas League tournament. Corning will face Doniphan County on Saturday at 4:00pm in the first round, while Sabetha will get the winner of Leavenworth and Seneca and play that Semifinal game on Sunday at 4:00pm.
