Dwindling enrollment over the past few years have led to a few school closures in Northeast Kansas and a few other fluctuating in their classification for sports competition and etc. Low numbers have struck another area school in Washington County as the Tigers have only 15 players out of high school football this year.

With the low numbers and similar low numbers expected in the years to come the Tigers have decided to make the switch to 8-Man football for the 2018 and 2019 seasons. Tigers become the third area team to make the move to 8-Man football over the past few years as both Valley Falls and Onaga made the adjustment last year. The Tigers can make the adjustment to 8-Man football next year as 2017 marks the end of a two-year cycle and the move will also come with the classification system change next year. Washington County just three years ago was a 3A team in football.

Currently eight of the 13 teams in the Twin Valley League play 8-Man football with Onaga moving down just last year. With Washington County moving to 8-Man that will only leave Centralia, Valley Heights, Troy and Doniphan West as 11-Man teams in the TVL.
