Axtell Eagles Fly Past Southern Cloud

Axtell Eagles took part in their own edition of Monday Night football on September 11th as they hosted Southern Cloud to continue the football season and won in routing fashion 70-20 ending the contest with 5:07 left in the game. 

After the Eagles turned Southern Cloud over on downs to open the game the Axtell offense took flight and found the endzone with 9:58 on the clock in the first quarter as Michael Swanson busted a 36-yard touchdown run making it 8-0. The Eagles offense continued to score early doing so on their first four offensive drives of the game as Quinn Buessing hit Hunter Koch for a 20-yard touchdown pass, Buessing hit Swanson for a 46-yard touchdown pass and Swanson busted a 61-yard touchdown run with 58 seconds remaining in the first quarter. At the end of the first Axtell led 30-6 as Southern Cloud had their score come from Carson Bellows on a 35-yard touchdown run after converting on a third and 18 with Morgan Coleman rushing for 21-yards to continue the drive. 

Axtell did all the scoring in the second quarter as Swanson ran for his third touchdown of the game this one from 25-yards out and then the Eagles recorded a safety to make it 40-6. The free kick after the safety was taken by 71-yards by Hunter Koch for another score and the Eagles flew into halftime up 48-6. 

In the second half the reserves came in for Axtell and while moving the ball it was Southern Cloud scoring in the third quarter with 12 and 55-yard touchdown runs by Blake Gumm making it 48-20 entering the fourth quarter. The first team unit came back in for the Eagles in the fourth and Quinn Buessing tossed a 14-yard touchdown to Koch and Koch found the endzone also on a 10-yard run making it 64-20. The Eagles recovered a fumble on the kickoff by Southern Cloud and after losing some yards Axtell had a fourth down and 17 from the 33-yard line and Mitchell Buessing hit Clark Werner in stride for the game ending score with 5:07 remaining as Axtell won 70-20. 

Eagles outgained Southern Cloud 426 to 183 total yards of offense in the contest. Swanson ran for 155 yards with three touchdowns, while catching a TD pass and was named Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" on KMZA. While, Quinn Buessing was 9-13 for 135 yards with three touchdowns and Koch caught five passes for 61 yards with a pair of touchdowns and a touchdown run. 

The win moves Axtell to 2-1 on the season and now The Eagles have a long break before hitting the gridiron again on September 22nd at home versus St. Paul.
