Behind a solid defensive performance and a strong running game, the Sabetha Bluejays football team remained perfect on the season with a 49-6 win over Royal Valley Friday night in Hoyt.

The Bluejays wasted no time jumping all over the Panthers racing out to a 21-0 lead after just the first quarter. Wyatt Beyer, who wasn’t expected to play, got Sabetha going with a 4-yard touchdown run with 9:45 to play in the opening quarter. Braeden Cox tacked on the extra point, and the Bluejays had a 7-0 lead.

After a three-and-out by the Panthers, Sabetha wasted no time going up two scores as Gabe Garber found Mason Spellmeier on a halfback pass for a 66-yard touchdown just two plays into the drive. The Bluejays were able to score one more time in the first quarter, going up 21-0 on a Joel Hackney 39-yard run to take control early.

Sabetha put the game away with two more scores in the final five minutes of the second quarter, as Brandon Brownlee threw a pair of touchdown passes to Blake Frey and Joe Gruber to put the Bluejays up 35-0 at halftime.

Sabetha scored two more times in the second half on a 7-yard run by Joel Hackney for his second score of the game and a 44-yard scamper by Gabe Garber.

Royal Valley’s lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Brandon Rodewald.

The Bluejays finished with 298 rushing yards in the contest lead by Mason Engelken who ran for 79 yards on just five carries, while Joel Hackney rushed for 78 yards on 11 carries and two scores.

Sabetha (4-0, 3-0 Big 7) now gets set for a huge home matchup with undefeated Perry Lecompton (4-0), while Royal Valley (2-2, 2-2 Big 7) stays home to host Holton (2-2).
