Sabetha Girls Tennis Puts Together Solid Performances at Washburn Rural Invite

Sabetha Bluejays girl's tennis were in full force swing the rackets on Wednesday at the Washburn Rural Invitational with plenty of gals in action. 

Leading the way on the day was a 2-1 day by Kirsten Wenger who finished third place in singles competition. Wenger after a first round bye won in the quarterfinals 8-3 over Washburn Rural but then fell in the Semifinals 8-4. In the final match of the day for Wenger she earned an 8-2 win over Shawnee Heights competitor and took third place. 

Also in singles action on the day for Sabetha was Savanna Osthoff who went 2-2 and placed sixth. Osthoff earned a first round 8-0 win over Washburn Rural but then fell 8-1 to another Washburn Rural competitor in the quarterfinals. Savanna bounced back with a 8-5 win over Topeka West and then lost a tough 8-5 contest in the fifth place match against the host Washburn Rural giving her sixth place. Sammi Gutknecht was also in action for the Bluejays falling in her lone match 8-0. 

In doubles competition the Bluejays were led by a sixth place finish by the tandem of Kinsey Menold and Hannah Wertenberger. Menold and Wertenberger won their first match 8-4 over Shawnee Heights but then fell 8-1 to Washburn Rural bouncing back with a win over their teammates to move into the fifth place match were they wrapped up the day with a tough loss finishing 2-2 to take sixth. The team of Jessica Payne and Ashten Halls went 1-2 on the day taking seventh place beating teammates Nicole Stallbaumer and Lauren Gatz in the final match of the day as Stallbaumer and Gatz placed eighth with a 0-3 day after a first round bye. 

The teams of Olivia Meyer and Emily Murchison and Amber and Ashlyn Menold finished 11th and 12th on the day as they faced each other in the final match of the day and Meyer and Murchison was victorious in that contest 8-2. 

Up next the Sabetha Bluejays will compete in the 3-2-1A Regionals at Hillsboro on Friday and Saturday October 6th and 7th looking to earn a spot at the State tournament.
