In a matchup of unbeaten teams Friday night the Sabetha Bluejays used a strong running game to stay perfect on the 2017 season with a 28-21 win over Perry Lecompton in Sabetha.

The Bluejays wasted no time getting the ground attack working on the opening drive of the game, wasting four minutes off the clock before Gabe Garber took it in from 23 yards out to put Sabetha up 7-0.

After Perry’s first drive of the game stalled out near midfield the Bluejays went to the ground again, as Joe Gruber capped off a short field with a 4-yard touchdown run to quickly make the score 14-0, Sabetha.

The Kaws weren’t going to go away quickly, though, as on the ensuing kickoff Shane Quinlan went 95 yards to the house to pull Perry back within one score.

Sabetha then looked as though they were going to answer that kickoff with a drive inside of the Perry five yard line, but a fumble ended the threat and shifted the momentum back to the Kaws.  The two teams traded possessions for the remainder of the half, as the score remained at 14-7 heading into halftime.

The Bluejays came out in the third quarter and put the nail in the coffin with two more Joe Gruber touchdowns from four yards and 21 yards to go back up three scores heading into the fourth quarter.

The Kaws made things interesting late with a pair of touchdown passes from Dalton Kellum, one to Quinlan from 23 yards out and the other a 7-yard strike to Cole Logan, but Perry simply ran out of time.

Sabetha finished the game with 324 rushing yards, as Gruber led the way with 157 yards on 26 carries and four touchdowns while Wyatt Beyer added 88 yards on 15 rushes.

Perry’s Dalton Kellumm finished 16 of 21 for 162 yards and two touchdowns along with an interception, while also leading the Kaws on the ground with 61 yards on 19 carries.

Sabetha (5-0, 4-0 Big 7) now hits the road for a league matchup at ACCHS (0-5, 0-4), while Perry (4-1, 3-1) hosts Nemaha Central (5-0, 4-0) next Friday night.
