By Jonny Kane

For the ninth straight season the Sabetha Bluejays’ football team is off to the playoffs after claiming the second spot of Class 3A District One with a 57-0 win over Riverside Thursday night at home.

The Bluejays dominated all facets from the start, holding the Cyclones to just 52 total offensive yards while rushing for 436 yards.

Sabetha jumped out to a 22-0 lead after the first quarter, forcing Riverside into four straight three-and-outs to begin the game. Joe Gruber started the scoring for the Bluejays four minutes into the contest on an 18-yard touchdown run, while less than two minutes later Wyatt Beyer added Sabetha’s second score of the game on a 9-yard run.

Gabe Garber capped off the first quarter scoring with a 9-yard run of his own, while Brandon Brownlee opened the second quarter with a 6-yard touchdown run before Mason Engelken pushed the Bluejays halftime lead to 35-0 with a 51-yard score.

With a running clock in the second half Sabetha was able to find the end zone three more times, as Garber scored his second touchdown of the night while Joel Hackney and Tristan Edelman found pay dirt.

The Bluejays finished with 454 total yards, led by Mason Engelken who went over 600 yards on the season with 109 yards rushing on just six carries and one touchdown. Wyatt Beyer, Joe Gruber and Joel Hackney also each ran for over 50 yards, while Gabe Garber added two touchdown runs.
