After the first State title in school history in volleyball last year and a top three finish the last three years the Axtell lady Eagles were back at State again this season competing in the 1A-Division II State tournament.

The Eagles entered State as the #7 seed for the second straight year and opened pool play with a contest against the #2 seed Northern Valley. After falling down 10-3 early the Eagles were unable to recover and lost set one 25-14. Set two was tight early and then Axtell put together a small run to go up by four or five points multiple times during the set and the used that cushion to take the second set 25-20 forcing the third set. Tight early Northern Valley held a 17-13 advantage and Axtell called a timeout the Eagles made a run and fended off set point multiple times but ultimately fell 25-21 losing the match in three sets to the eventual State Champs.

The Eagles next matchup in pool play was with St. John's/Tipton and Axtell came out of the gate quick taking flight in the first set working out to a 7-2 lead and growing that lead to 19-9 and then finishing the first set on a 6-0 run after a St. John's/Tipton timeout, taking the set 25-9. The second set was completely flipped as St. John's/Tipton led 7-0 to start the set and cruised to a 25-8 set two win. In the third set each team owned multiple leads but St. John's/Tipton worked to a 15-10 lead and held Axtell at bay the rest of the way to secure the match with a 25-12 set two win.

Looking to cap the year strong and the State tournament Axtell faced off with Waverly in pool play and played strong to earn a straight set win 25-16, 25-21. The Eagles in set one worked to an 11-7 lead and then 18-10 lead caused Waverly to call timeout each time and Axtell took the first set 25-16. In set two it was a bit tighter as it was tied 13-13 but Axtell would regain the lead and then hold off Waverly down the stretch for the straight set win taking set two 25-21.

The 1-2 performance at State wrapped up the year for Axtell as they capped the season 19-21.
