Sabetha Girls and Boys Open Basketball Season With Impressive Wins Over Riverside

The Sabetha Lady Bluejay basketball team opened up the 2017-18 season in a big way Thursday night at home racing out to an 18-3 lead after the first quarter before going on to take down Riverside in dominating fashion 51-12.

The Lady Bluejays’ defense dominated the entirety of the contest, holding the Lady Cyclones to just three points in the first and third quarters while not allowing any points in the fourth quarter.

Sabetha started fast going on a 9-0 run to begin the ballgame while holding Riverside scoreless until under three minutes left in the first quarter.

The Lady Bluejays blew the game wide open in the third quarter, forcing seven Lady Cyclone turnovers while outscoring Riverside 14-3 in the quarter led Morgan Schuette’s seven points.

Sabetha in total forced 16 Riverside turnovers, while shooting 12 of 18 from the free throw line and holding the Lady Cyclones to just five attempts from the charity stripe.

BOYS

Just like the Sabetha girls, the Bluejay boys started fast and never looked back in the season opener Thursday night in a 53-34 win over Riverside.

Senior Brett Stallbaumer got Sabetha off to a hot start, notching 10 first quarter points as the Bluejays jumped out to a 20-3 lead after the first quarter. Neither team got much going in the second quarter as the two teams combined for 11 total points, but after the big first quarter Sabetha took a 27-9 lead into halftime.

The Bluejays were able to extend their lead to 21 after three quarters holding Riverside to just eight points in the frame, giving head coach Scott Burger a chance to rest starters in the fourth quarters.

Sabetha (1-0) now gets set for a huge non-league matchup with Class 4A-II preseason No. 3 Marysville Friday night, with live coverage on the Sabetha Channel.
