The high school basketball is off and running and the Doniphan West Mustangs galloped out to a 1-0 start for the girls and boys after a sweep of Onaga in Twin Valley League action with the girls claiming a 46-30 win and the boys notching a 53-30 victory.

It was a slow start on the night for the both girl's teams but Doniphan West was able to hit their stride while Onaga struggled to find consistency. By the end of the first quarter the Mustangs held a 10-4 lead and extended that lead with a run in the second quarter to go up by 11-points but Onaga had a flurry led by Belinda Ames who score 10 of the teams 12 points in the quarter to make it 19-16 at the half with the Buffaloes trailing by just three. Onaga despite the slow start to the second outscored Doniphan West 12-9 in the frame. Out of halftime Doniphan West continued to force Onaga turnovers and Heidi Leach turned a pair of steals into buckets early in the third quarter to give Doniphan West a 7-0 run to push the led back to double figures. The lead remained at double figures most of the second half as the Mustangs balanced attack on offense and pestering defense pushed them to the 46-30 win.

Doniphan West had eight different gals in score on the night with Brooklyn Rush leading the way with nine points, while Shayna Wilson and Myah Olson each chipped in eight points. Wilson played well all-around grabbing several rebounds and led the way as one of the seniors for the Mustangs and that earned her Citizens State Bank and Trust Company "Player to Bank On" honors helping the team start the year 1-0.

Onaga in the loss was led by Ames who scored 18 of the teams 30 points and earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors, while Rebecca Krohn finished with eight points. Lady Buffaloes struggled to hold onto the ball with 30+ turnovers and fall to 0-1 to open the year.

The Onaga and Doniphan West boys played four times last year with the Buffaloes coming out on top each time. This year both teams head into the season at different points as Doniphan West brings back a strong starting group while Onaga is replacing nearly all of their production. The Buffaloes got going early by the hands of Tanner Marten who netted eight points in the first stanza and guided Onaga to the 12-7 lead after the first quarter. That lead quickly flipped to Doniphan West and the offense got rolling and behind a 15-2 run in the second quarter and a 22-8 quarter overall the Mustangs led 29-20 at intermission. Devin Taylor spear headed the run with 11 points in the second. The offense continued to struggle for Onaga in the second half as they were limited to 10 points after halftime and Doniphan West put the clamps on to earn the 53-30 win.

A trio of double figure scorers led the Mustangs as Taylor tallied a game high 14 points, while Clayton Ridout scored 13 points and Newt Smith added 12 points including 4-4 from the free throw line. Ridout had plenty of open looks on the night and knocked them down while making several gritty plays earning him Citizens State Bank and Trust Company "Player to Bank On" honors as the Mustangs open the year 1-0.

Onaga starts the year 0-1 and had a hard time getting the offense rolling after the first quarter and had just four guys score on the night with Marten and Quinton Norris accounting for 22 of the teams 30 points. Marten tallied 12 points, while recording nearly a handful of blocks and grabbing plenty of rebounds to earn Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors, while Norris tallied 10 points.
