Sixteen Area High School Basketball Teams Ranked in Latest KBCA Rankings

Basketball season is in full swing now with every team having played at least two games and the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association has released its latest rankings which feature 16 area teams in the latest polls. Ten area girl’s teams are ranked and six boys teams from the area are in the polls with plenty of change happening this week. 

Class 1A-Division I continues to house the most area teams with six in the rankings. The girl’s poll continues to feature four area teams but there has been change from the previous week. The lady Wildcats of Hanover continue to hold the #1 spot after a 2-0 start to the year beating Troy and Axtell last week, while Centralia lady Panthers are 3-0 after wins over Axtell and Wetmore last week and remain ranked #2 in the 1A-DI polls. Valley Falls Dragons bounced back from season opening loss to Centralia to beat Pleasant Ridge and Oskaloosa last week and sit at 2-1 on the year and moved up one spot to #6 in the rankings. While the Frankfort Wildcats have pounced on their opponents to a 4-0 start to the year beating Valley Heights and Washington County last week and break into the rankings this week coming in at #8. 

On the boys side of the 1A-DI rankings its Hanover and Doniphan West continuing to hold top spots coming in ranked at #1 and #3 again this week. Hanover dispatched Axtell and Troy to open the year 2-0, while Doniphan West edged Clifton-Clyde and beat Troy last week to move to 3-0 on the season. 

Class 3A features five Big Seven League teams this week in the rankings. On the girls side the #1 spot now belongs to the lady Thunder of Nemaha Central as they are 3-0 to open the year after beating ACCHS and Holton last week. While the Sabetha girls who are 3-1 after wins over Perry Lecompton and ACCHS break into the polls at #8 this week. On the boys side the Nemaha Central boys sit at 3-0 after cruising past ACCHS and Holton last week and move up to #3 in the latest rankings, while Perry Lecompton is also 3-0 after wins over Sabetha and Royal Valley and are up one spot to #7. The Sabetha Bluejay boys are 2-2 after falling to Perry Lecompton last week and beating ACCHS and remain ranked #10 this week in the 3A polls. 

Four area teams area ranked in the latest 4A-Division II polls with plenty of shake up for the area teams in the rankings. The Jeff West girls bounced back from a season opening loss to Nemaha Central by beating Wamego and Riverside to be 2-1 on the season and jumped to #1 in the rankings. Holton lady Wildcats beat Royal Valley but fell to Nemaha Central last week to be 2-1 and in the polls jumped six spots to #3. While the Marysville girls made their debut in the 4A-DII rankings coming in at #4 after a 4-0 start to the year as they beat Falls City and Clay Center last week. The Marysville boys are also 4-0 with wins over Falls City and Clay Center last week and remain ranked #3 in the 4A-DII boy’s rankings. 

Only one area teams finds themselves in the Class 2A rankings and that is the lady Chargers of Jefferson County North who rankings #5 again this week after topping Horton last week to improve to 2-0 on the year. 

The basketball season continues this week; make sure to tune into coverage of area games every Tuesday and Friday throughout the season on 103.9 KNZA, 92.1 KMZA and KAIR 93.7 FM along with the Holton and Sabetha Channels.
