Axtell Eagles Sweep Troy in TVL Action

Axtell Eagles took flight on the basketball court on Tuesday night using strong offensive nights to work past fellow Twin Valley League team the Troy Trojans on the road. Lady Eagles picked up their first win of the season claiming a 66-15 win, while Axtell boys closed the game strong fending off Troy for a 68-57 victory. 

GIRLS 

The Axtell Eagles took advantage of Troy turnovers and had great balance on offense with six players scoring seven plus points on the night. Axtell worked to a 10-2 lead by the 3:38 mark in the first quarter when Troy called a timeout. After the timeout the Eagles would finish the first quarter on a 10-1 run and lead 20-3 after one frame. The lead continued to grow over the course of the contest as Axtell posted a 14-5 second quarter to lead 34-5 at halftime and started the second half with a 21-6 third quarter going on to earn the 66-15 win. 

Axtell was led by a trio of players in double figures on the night as Emi Deters paced the way with 12 points scoring six points in the second and fourth quarter's each earning her Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Trisha Mathewson chipped in 11 points while Hanna Schmitz scored 10 points as Axtell picked up their first win of the season moving to 1-4 and 1-2 in TVL play. 

Troy in the loss was led by Kassidy Ashworth and Macy Norris who each scored four points as the Trojans fell to 0-3 on the year and 0-3 in the TVL. 

Both teams continue their season on Thursday, December 14th as Axtell travels to Riley County (game will be on 92.1 KMZA) and Troy will play host to Jefferson County North.

BOYS

It was a tale of runs and momentum swings in the boys matchup at Troy on Tuesday night between Axtell and Troy with the Eagles putting together the final run to secure the win. 

Axtell flew out of the gate going up 8-0 but Troy had an answer putting together a 9-0 run to take a 9-8 advantage and then back and forth it went with Troy holding the 19-16 lead after the first quarter. Jacob Mott led the Trojans in the first scoring nine of the teams 19 in the quarter. Eagles swung the lead back to their side at 26-25 with 4:50 left in first half and finished the first half on a 14-4 run from when they took the lead back. Hunter Koch was a big part of Axtell regaining the lead as he a nine-point spurt of his own in the strong finish to the first half for the Eagles helping them lead 42-29 at intermission. Troy answered to start the second half with a 9-0 to open the second half and battle to tie the game at 46-46 and then with a Reid Jasper three-pointer trailed only by one-point, 50-49 entering the fourth quarter. Axtell closed the game strong with an 18-8 fourth quarter and took the game 68-57. 

A pair of 21 point performances led Axtell on the night as Koch and Quinn Buessing each posted those performances. Koch was all over the floor with his defense also and that partnered with his scoring earned him Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. JJ Hart added a double figure night scoring 15 points including an eight point fourth quarter. The win moves Axtell to 2-3 on the season and 1-2 in TVL action. 

Troy in the loss had a trio of the guys in double figures in the loss led by Jacob Mott who netted 17 points, while Reid Jasper scored 16 points and Tate Smith scored 10 points. Kipp Jasper chipped in nine points on the night as the Trojans fell to 0-3 on the year and 0-3 in the TVL. 

Both teams continue their season on Thursday, December 14th as Axtell travels to Riley County (game will be on 92.1 KMZA) and Troy will play host to Jefferson County North.
