Jeff West & Onaga Wrestlers Compete at Council Grove Invite

Jeff West Tigers and Onaga Buffaloes wrestling squads continued their season competing at the Council Grove Invitational in the latest action. 

The Tigers while finishing 11th as a team had a strong day with the their three wrestlers who were in action all finishing fourth or better. A 5-0 day at 138lbs led the Tigers as Kody Gibson wrestled his way to first place. Gibson started the day earning two wins by pinfall in 2:00 and 1:43 and picked up another by injury default. In the Semifinals Gibson dispatched his opponent by pinfall in just 51 seconds and then moved into the Championship match were he won again by pinfall this time in 1:30. 

Joel Scott earned third place at 145lbs for Jeff West by going 4-1 on the day including a 6-0 decision win in the third place match. Scott's other three wins came via pinfall in 26 seconds, 1:05 and 1:32. Shane Kelly with a 2-3 performance at 126lbs finished fourth at the Council Grove Invite. Kelly won his two bouts by major decision 11-3 and pinfall 1:30. 

Leading the way for Onaga was a second place finish by Kylar Schmidt who went 3-2 to take second place at 182lbs. Schmidt earned a pair of wins by pinfall (3:34 & 4:00) and also picked up a 1-0 decision win. Vincent Lara wrestled his way to a 1-4 day on the mats at 220lbs finishing fifth, while Kedric Ames at 152lbs went 3-2 and finished sixth. Lara's lone win was by pinfall in 45 seconds, while Ames won by pinfall three times 1:07, 3:08 and 1:47. 

Both Morgan Mayginnes and Trenton Cott each finished seventh at their respective weight classes of 138lbs and 160lbs. Mayginnes went 2-3 in action with two pinfall wins in 5:34 and 5:05, while Cott posted a 1-4 record with a 10-0 major decision win. 

The wrestling season is set to continue for Onaga on Saturday, January 27th when the Buffaloes compete at the Atchison Invite, while Jeff West will also compete at Atchison but will host a home double dual on Thursday, January 25th before then.
