From start to finish Friday night the Sabetha girls’ basketball team dominated, as they bounced back from Tuesday’s loss to Jeff West with a convincing 51-11 win over Hiawatha on senior night.

The Lady Jays’ defense was the star of the night from the moment the ball was tipped, as Sabetha forced five first quarter Hiawatha turnovers while holding the Lady Redhawks scoreless to take a 16-0 lead after one.

Sabetha forced six more turnovers in the second quarter and quickly put the game out of reach, outscoring Hiawatha 17-5 in the quarter to lead 33-5 at halftime. Nine different girls found the scoring column in the first half for the Lady Jays led by Kinley Schuette’s 9 points.

The Lady Jays finished off their outstanding defensive performance allowing just six total points in the second half and forcing 15 total turnovers, while all 13 girls who saw the floor found the scoring column.

Sabetha (10-8, 8-6 Big 7) now gets set for the final week of the regular season beginning Tuesday at Holton, while Hiawatha (2-16, 2-12 Big 7) will head to Jeff West.

BOYS

Just like the girls the Sabetha boys started fast and never looked back Friday night, as the Bluejays finished off a sweep of Hiawatha with an impressive 60-36 win.

Unlike the Lady Jays whose defense was the star of the night in their win it was the Sabetha boys offense that started fast, as the Bluejays exploded for 19 points in the first quarter behind 7 points from Ryan Stapelton and 5 points from Brett Stallbaumer to take a 19-8 lead after one.

Sabetha’s defense allowed them to extend their lead in the second quarter, as the Bluejays forced three turnovers and held Hiawatha to just six points in the quarter. The Bluejays really took control at the end of the half with a quick 4-0 spurt in the final five seconds with baskets by Stallbaumer and Braeden Cox to take a 32-14 lead into halftime.

Sabetha would lead by as many as 27 points in the second half and finished the contest forcing the Redhawks into 13 total turnovers.

The Bluejays (12-6, 10-4 Big 7) now head to Holton Tuesday to start the final week of the regular season, while Hiawatha (3-15, 2-12 Big 7) will travel to Jeff West.
