The Valley Heights Mustangs are on a full gallop into the Class 2A State tournament riding a wave of momentum claiming the Sub-State title on Saturday behind a 46-42 win over Smith Center.
Tight early between the two the teams were tied at 10 after one quarter but a 13-7 second quarter allowed Valley Heights to go up by six into halftime 23-17. That lead however didn't hold up as Smith Center answered out of halftime using a 15-9 third quarter to tie the contest at 32-32 after three quarters of play. The Mustangs finished off the contest with a 14-10 fourth quarter and held off Smith Center down the stretch securing the win 46-42 win in the final minute of the ballgame.
While only four girls scored in the win against Smith Center it was spread out scoring for the Mustang between the four as Emma Toerber scored 14 points to lead the way, Sam Vermetten netted 13 points, Kayla Smith tallied 10 points and Shea Manley posted nine points.
With the win Valley Heights moves to 19-5 on the season and has won seven in a row and 11 of the last 12 heading in the 2A State Tournament. The girls are headed back to State for the first time since 2014 when they finished State runner-up in Class 1A-DI and are set to make their 11th State appearance overall.
The Mustangs draw the six seed at the 2A State Tournament in Manhattan and will play their first round game on Wednesday, March 7th at 8:15pm against the three seed West Elk (20-2). (The first round game will be broadcasted on 92.1 KMZA)
