Playing in their first state basketball tournament game since 1982, and against the state runner up from a year ago with every player back on their roster, Cheney (#3 seed) was too much for Perry Lecompton (#6 seed) on Wednesday night in the opening round of Class 3A in Hutchinson.  The Kaws made seven of their first nine shots and had three early leads, but trailed 20-15 at the end of the first quarter.  Cheney turned 22 Perry Lecompton turnovers into 25 points while dominating the rebounds in the first half before pulling away for the 53-35 win.

The Cardinals were 7-19 from three-point range and made 16 of 23 free throws while Perry Lecompton was just 3-11 behind the arc and 4-6 at the line.  Cheney also got 28 points off their bench in a balanced attack, led by non-starters, Hunter Adolph with 11 points and Trey Patterson with nine. The Cardinals led 36-24 at halftime and by as many as 19 points while improving to 22-2 on the season. They will play #3 seed Phillipsburg (22-1) in the semifinals on Friday with MH-MA and Halstead also advancing with tight quarterfinal wins.

Perry Lecomton was led in scoring by one of their four seniors, Canaan Daniels, with 13 points, while Colton Mallonee added 11 points and eight rebounds as the Kaws closed the best season in a long time with a 20-4 record.
