Doniphan West Baseball Sweeps Troy

Each looking for the first win of the baseball season Doniphan West and Troy did battle on the diamond back on Thursday and the Mustangs snapped a 10-game losing streak in the series ultimately earning the sweep with 12-6 and 5-3 victories. 

Game one saw Doniphan West take the early lead as Zeb Speer scored the initial run of the contest in the bottom of the first inning in Highland. The Mustangs would continually score throughout the contest plating another run in the second and third innings but Troy with their first run of the season in the third and two more in the Top of the fourth tied the game at 3-3. Doniphan West galloped right back into the lead with a three-run bottom of the fourth and added five more in the fifth. Troy tried to mount a comeback with a three-run top of the sixth but a run in the bottom of the sixth by Doniphan West pushed the lead to six and the Mustangs went on to win 12-6 for Doniphan West. 

Creed Parsons helped lead Doniphan West going 3-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Speer was 3-5 with three runs scored and Rodger Groves had a three-hit game and earned the win on the mound going six innings. Multiple Trojans had multi-hit games including Marcus Martinez and Cale Hamilton, Martinez took the loss on the mound. 

Game two was a bit tighter all the way down to the wire as Doniphan West managed to earn the doubleheader sweep over Troy. Troy with two-outs in the top of the first inning got a base runner via a hit by pitch and with a single and an error scratched the first run across the board in the top of the first. Doniphan West had an answer in the bottom of the first using a walk, single, pair of wild pitches and balk to score two and lead 2-1 after one inning. Both teams would have opportunities to score the next few innings and it was the Mustangs adding to their lead with a run in the third, but Troy had a run in the fourth on an RBI triple from Jacob Moore to make it 3-2 Doniphan West. Troy tied the contest in the Top of the fifth on an RBI single by Lane Etherton but Doniphan West had the answer in the bottom of the fifth as a double, pair of walks and an error helped the Mustangs score a run and regain the lead before adding an insurance run in the sixth to take the 5-3 win. 

Levi Watts led Doniphan West going 2-4 at the plate with a double, while tossing six and one-third innings for the win giving up three runs on six hits, a walk and hit batter by struckout 15. Remington Powell added a 2-3 showing for the Mustangs. Troy in the loss got four and two-thirds innings work from starter Hamilton as he also scored two runs. Martinez was 2-4 for the Trojans and Ike Morris had a double. 

The pair of wins snapped a 10-game losing streak to Troy for Doniphan West and moved them to 2-2 on the season, while Troy fell to 0-4 to open the baseball season. 

Doniphan West is next in action on Monday, April 9th at 4:30pm against Auburn in a single game, while Troy will be in action again on Monday also at Mclouth for a doubleheader set to start at 4:30pm.
