Atchison Girls and Boys Each Finish Second at KCAL League Track Meet

Behind nine first place finishes, the Atchison boys and girls track teams each took second place at the Kansas-City Atchison league meet at Schlagle Friday evening. The girls finished 10.5 points behind league champion Sumner Academy, while the Redmen boys were just five points behind champion Wyandotte.

Adalynn Collins led the way on the girls side with three total first place finishes dominating the distance races, as she took the 800 meter run by over 10 seconds, the 1600 meter run by over 30 seconds, and the 3200 meter run by almost two minutes.

Arhianna Franklin followed right behind Collins with two gold medals of her own, as she raced to wins in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles with times of 17.72 and 49.96, respectively.

The Lady Red rounded out first place finishes on the girls’ side in the field events, as Kadejah Ross took the triple jump league title with a leap of 29’08.00.

Atchison also had several top three performances on the girls’ side as Franklin took the silver in the 100 meter dash and bronze in the 200 meter dash, while Erikah Smith finished in third in the 400 meter dash and Mattie Dougherty third in the 800 meter run. The girls’ 4X400 and 4X800 meter relay teams also took second.

On the boys side the Redmen had just one first place finish on the track with Alex Martin taking the 400 meter dash (53.32), while in the field events Nathan Stone took the pole vault league title (9’00) and Nick Funk the discus title with a throw of 106’04.75.

Martin also took second in the 200 meter dash for Atchison with a time of 23.37, while Steven Jolly took bronze in the 800 meter run (2:13.64). Christian Arnold also picked up a pair of silver medals in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles, while the 4X400 and 4X800 meter relay teams each took second as well.

In the field events Jolly took bronze in the high jump (5’06.00), while Funk finished third in the shot put (39’10.00) and Xavier Hernandez second in the discus (106’03) to round out the day for the Redmen.

Atchison now gets set for the regional meet which is scheduled to take place Friday, May 18 at Clay Center beginning at 1 p.m.
