The high school volleyball season continued Tuesday night as Doniphan West hosted Wetmore and Washington County on 103.9 KNZA and 92.1 KMZA, and it was the Cardinals of Wetmore who finished the night 2-0 while the Mustangs went 1-1 and the Tigers 0-2.

In the first match of the night the host Doniphan West went up against Washington County, and the Mustangs picked up their first league win of 2018 taking down the Tigers in two sets 25-20, 25-20.

The first set was basically all Mustangs from the start. D-West jumped out to an 8-3 lead early, then extended their lead to 14-7 at one point. The Cardinals tried to make a comeback late pulling within four points at 19-15, but D-West recorded four of the final six points to take the set.

Set No. 2 was again dominated by the Mustangs from the start, as junior Makinley Smith and sophomore Heidi Leach had field days up front. D-West jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the set, then at one point doubled up Washington County 17-7. Sophomore Sadie Leach had a strong showing late in the set with a couple of kills, as the Mustangs ended up having to hold on after the Tigers pulled within four points late.

The second match of the night was also a two set match, as Wetmore took down Washington County in straight sets 25-18, 25-18.

The first set was dominated by the Cardinals, as they raced out to a 10-3 lead and at one point 23-14 before taking the set 25-18 as Reagan Osterhaus dominated at the net recording several kills.

The second set was much more competitive, as the Tigers had the set tied at 15 after Wetmore jumped out to an 8-5 lead. The set went back-and-forth midway through, but Wetmore ended the set and the match recording nine of the last 11 points to take the match in two sets.

The final match of the night was the most competitive, as Doniphan West and Wetmore had to go three sets before the Cardinals eventually came out on top 25-12, 19-25, 25-19.

Set one was complete domination by Wetmore, as the Cardinals jumped out to a 16-8 lead and at one point 20-10 before eventually taking the set 25-12.

The Mustangs responded though in the second set, coming back from a 10-7 advantage early and going on an 8-0 run at one point to lead 19-13. The Cardinals tried to mount a comeback pulling within three points at 20-17, but D-West rattled off six of the last eight points to force a decisive third with sophomore Myah Olson making a couple key plays at the net.

The decisive third set turned out to be one of runs, as the Mustangs jumped out to a 12-7 lead thanks to multiple Wetmore communication breakdowns. The Cardinals never faltered though, going on a 7-0 run midway through the set to take control of the set at 19-15. D-West wasn’t able to get any closer the rest of the match, as the Cardinals finished the evening 2-0.

The two wins improved Wetmore’s record to 7-9 overall and 4-5 in league play, while Doniphan West moved to 5-19 (1-9) with the 1-1 performance and Washington County after the two losses is now 4-16 (3-8).
