Lyming and Cumpton Carry Royal Valley Past Hiawatha

In a battle of 1-5 teams, Royal Valley scored on four of their first five drives of the game and Chance Lyming ran for 219 yards as the Panthers picked up a 28-12 road win at Hiawatha.  In their senior night and final home game, Hiawatha moved the ball, but could not convert of fourth downs (0-4) as they turned the ball over on downs four times inside the Royal Valley 35-yard-line. 

Lyming broke free on a 77-yard touchdown dash on the Panthers third play of the game and it was 8-0 after one quarter.  Quarterback Gavin Cumpton scored two touchdowns in the second quarter with a one-yard sneak and a 38-yard run to lead 20-6 at halftime as the Redhawks lone score came on an 80-yard kickoff return by Alan Simpson. 

Despite kicking off to start both halves, the Royal Valley defense would again bend but not break before Cumpton found Regan Ruddy on a 17-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to make it 28-6.  Fellow junior QB, Tyler Brockoff of Hiawatha hit Michael Moreno on a 45-yard pass play then Brockoff finished the only Hawks scoring drive of the night with a 14-yard touchdown run to pull within 28-12 at the 8:56 mark in the fourth quarter.  Hiawatha forced a quick punt, but again could not capitalize on offense turning the ball over on downs at the 28. 

The game lasted only one hour and 52 minutes with neither team turning the ball over.  Hiawatha had 129 yards rushing and Brockoff was 4-13 passing for 86 yards with Moreno making three of those catches for 83 yards.  Simpson registered 42 yards on nine carries while Brockoff ran seven times for 35 yards and Andrew Woods returned for the first time in four games adding 27 yards on 11 carries. 

Royal Valley ran the ball 48 times for a total of 341 yards and Cumpton was 1-3 passing with the TD strike to Ruddy.  Lyming had 26 carries to get his 219 yards while Cumpton ran for 106 yards on 18 carries and had a pair of touchdowns while also converting a rushing a passing two-point conversion to Kobe Mills.
