The Perry Lecompton boys basketball team accomplished something Saturday that the school hadn’t achieved since 1980 and that’s place at the state basketball tournament.

The Kaws overcame a 6-point third quarter deficit to finish the 2018-19 season with a third place finish at the 3A state tournament taking down Hays-TMP 57-49 in a rare thrilling third place game.

Perry Lecompton couldn’t have gotten off to a better start in the contest leading by 7 points after the first quarter and by 5 points at halftime behind 8 points from Connor Anderson and seven from Blake Farmer.

Out of the halftime break the Monarchs got back into the game and took their first lead with an 11-0 run to get out to a 6-point lead as the Kaws shot just 2-of-9 in the third quarter and trailed 41-39 going into the fourth.

Perry responded with a dominant fourth quarter to finish third, holding the Monarchs to just 2-of-12 shooting in the fourth while outscoring TMP 18-8.

The Kaws finished with three players in double-figures led by Anderson and Colton Mallonee who each finished with 12 points while Blake Farmer added 11 including seven in the second quarter.

Perry Lecompton wraps up their season 22-2 and with the best finish the school has seen since 1980.
