It was a star-studded lineup in the Big 7 League on the volleyball court Tuesday night in Sabetha with two ranked teams in Class 3A and the No. 1-ranked Royal Valley Panthers finished 2-0 on the night with a pair of two-set victories.

The opening match of the night put No. 7 Sabetha up against Nemaha Central and after a slow first set the Bluejays picked it up and rolled to a two-set win.

In set one the Thunder played well early and tied the set up at eight, but Sabetha jumped out to a 13-11 lead and never looked back to pick up a 25-18 win. Set two was all Bluejays from the jump, as Sabetha got off to leads of 4-2 and 7-3 before doubling up the Thunder several different times on the way to a 25-15 win.

The second match of the night put the top-ranked Royal Valley up against the Thunder and after sneaking out a set one win the Panthers dominated set two to win 2-0.

Nemaha Central jumped out to a 9-7 lead in set one, but Royal Valley went on a 4-0 run to take a 15-11 lead. The Panthers pushed their lead to 19-15 and after the Thunder pulled within one Royal Valley went on a 6-1 run to end the set 25-19.

The second set was all Royal Valley from the jump as the Panthers led 10-8 and 13-9 before taking control at 19-12 to go on to win 25-15.

The final match of the night was the best match putting two top 10 teams in the state against each other and after Royal Valley snuck out a set one win the Panthers dominated set two to win in two sets over Sabetha.

The Bluejays dominated a majority of set one jumping out to an early 10-4 lead and a 21-17 lead late, but Royal Valley went on a run and scored eight of the last 10 points to sneak out a first set victory 25-23.

After that the Panthers had all of the momentum and it showed in the second set with Royal Valley jumping out to an 11-4 lead before Sabetha scored seven straight to tie the set up at 11. The rest of the set was back-and-forth and after the set was tied up at 18 Royal Valley scored four of the final five points to win the set 25-21 and the match to wrap up a sweep.

Royal Valley was led by juniors Ivy Fink and Morgan Harvey who were dominant all night at the net, while fellow junior Emma McKinsey was solid as well for the Panthers who are now a perfect 17-0.

Sabetha finished 1-1 on the night and got solid performances across the board led by junior Melinna Schumann and senior libero Maggi Hughes moving the Bluejays record to 14-3 on the year with all three losses coming to Royal Valley.

Nemaha Central drops to 9-7 on the year with the two losses and despite the tough night the Thunder played well led by seniors Lexi Lueger and Alleigh Kramer along with freshman Addy Holthaus.
