Holton, KS

For the fourth consecutive week, the Holton Wildcats outgained their opponent, but for only the third consecutive week that aided to a win. Holton dominated from the opening whistle, until the final horn sounded at Holton High School. The Wildcats defeated Hiawatha 47-0 to improve to 3-1 as Hiawatha falls to 0-4.

It was every aspect that was dominant for Holton. Hiawatha's first offensive possession was cut short as Sophomore Connor Collins, in his first varsity start, picked off backup quarterback Alex Rockey. Four plays later, Konnor Tannahill punched it in from four yards out to get the scoring started for the 'Cats.

Following a three-and-out by Hiawatha's offense, Holton marched down the field capped by a Cannon Karn 12 yard touchdown run to put Holton up 14-0, still in the first quarter. Holton would score once more in the first half on another Karn run as Holton led 21-0 at halftime.

A change in the first half for Hiawatha saw Senior Michael Moreno move to quarterback to replace Rockey. All due to the absence of Senior Tyler Brockhoff due to injury, and the Redhawks definitely missed their dynamic duo of Brockhoff and Moreno on Friday night. Moreno would struggle to get much going through the air but used his elusiveness and speed to give Hiawatha opportunities inside Holton territory, unfortunately for first year head coach Michael Downard, no points would come of the great senior play.

Holton would score on some big plays in the third quarter to extend the lead as runs of 44 by Tannahill, 68 by Karn and 50 by Senior back Trey Wright would give Holton a 40-0 lead at the end of three quarters.

Holton was able to get some varsity time to players who might not normally see the field, and on offense that allowed them to score one time in the fourth as Keegan Purcell punched it in from 12 yards out to put Holton up 47-0.

A game for Hiawatha (0-4) that saw some promise with the highly skilled wide receiver Moreno turned quarterback and he accounted for 90 of the Redhawk 170 total yards. The Redhawks will now host Sabetha next Friday at 7:00pm. You can catch that game on the Sabetha Channel on mscsports.net

Holton (3-1) was able to try new things, get new players in and execute at a high level this week as they begin to take shape of a team that Holton fans were familiar with over a decade ago. Holton rushed for over 380 yards (Karn 125 yds 3 TD, Tannahill 87 yds 2 TD and Wright 141 yds TD) and could've gotten more if 24 year Head Coach Brooks Barta wanted to. Holton will square off against their Jackson County rival, winless Royal Valley next Friday at 7:00pm. You can catch that game on the Holton Channel at mscsports.net

Then Holton will have huge district games looming in the final three weeks against Sabetha, at Marysville and Wamego.
