It was a night to remember for the Doniphan West and Wetmore football teams Friday with the opportunity to play at Highland Community College and the Mustangs took full advantage blowing out the Cardinals on senior night 54-7 ending the game two minutes into the fourth quarter.

Doniphan West scored touchdowns on all eight of their offensive possessions on the night beginning with a Kole Franken 7-yard run to jump in front 6-0 less than four minutes in.

The Mustangs then forced a fumble on Wetmore’s first offensive play and five plays later Trent Spiker found Carter Jensen on a 10-yard touchdown pass and just like that Doniphan West had a 12-0 lead.

Following another turnover by Wetmore the Mustangs ballooned their lead to 20 in the first quarter on another Franken 4-yard run and the rout was on.

Doniphan West pushed their lead to 34-0 by halftime on a Spiker 6-yard run and 25-yard pass to Cooper Jensen and held Wetmore to under 60 total yards of offense.

The Mustangs extended the lead to 40-0 early on in the third quarter on a Nathaniel Howerton and added runs by Spiker and Creighton Johnson to cap off the scoring.

Wetmore got their only touchdown on a Storm Hackler 37-yard pass to Eric Bloom which came late in the third quarter.

The Mustangs finished with over 300 total yards of offense led by Spiker’s 95 yards on the ground with two touchdowns while he added two through the air. Kole Franken didn’t have a big yardage day, but he did find the end zone twice.

Doniphan West (2-4) earned their first true win of the season and will travel to Blue Valley next week, while Wetmore (1-5) hosts Hanover next Friday night.
