Valley Heights Girls and Boys Sweep Twin Valley League Tournament Championships

After what was a long week featuring 44 games the Twin Valley League Tournament concluded Saturday evening with the Valley Heights Mustangs sweeping the tournament championships as the girls took down Centralia 53-38 while the boys beat Hanover 48-33.

Boys TVL Championship: #8 Valley Heights 48, No. 7 Hanover 33

After pulling upset after upset throughout the week the Valley Heights boys led from start to finish and forced 26 turnovers to earn the boy’s championship with a 48-33 win over Hanover.

The Mustangs got down 4-1 early in the first quarter but got a couple of baskets from junior Cameron Beardsley to lead 7-4 after one.

From there the Mustangs never trailed, forcing six turnovers in the second quarter while junior Jackson O’Toole scored nine points to give Valley Heights a 21-11 lead going into the half.

The Mustangs took complete control in the third and bumped their lead up to 12 points going into the fourth quarter before junior Evan Haines knocked down 4-of-5 free throws in the fourth to seal the win.

O’Toole led the Mustangs in the win with 19 points while Beardsley added 12.

Hanover was led by Blake Hynek who finished with 17.

Girls TVL Championship: #3 Valley Heights 53, #4 Centralia 38

The girl’s championship game was just like the boys with Valley Heights jumping out early and never looking back to claim a 53-38 win over Centralia.

The Mustangs led 14-3 after one quarter forcing seven turnovers while junior Emma Toerber and senior Sam Vermetten combined for eight points in the quarter.

Valley Heights pushed that lead to 17 going into the half behind six second quarter points from sophomore Emma Yungeberg and a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from sophomore Cat Toerber.

Centralia tried to get back in the game in the third quarter with senior Kennedy Becker scoring five points to pull the Panthers back to within 14 point going into the fourth, but in the fourth the Mustangs forced four crucial turnovers to seal the game.

Sam Vermetten was solid all game long for the Mustangs finishing with a game-high 15 points while Emma Toerber added 11 and Emma Yungeberg 10.

Centralia was led by Kennedy Becker’s 10 while Olivia Kuckelman added nine and Morgan Kramer eight.

Boys Third Place Game: #5 Frankfort 61, #6 Axtell 47

Despite trailing at halftime, the Frankfort boys used a strong third quarter to take control and claim third place with a 61-47 win over Axtell.

It was the Eagles who started fast though jumping out to an 18-14 lead after one quarter behind eight points each from Quinn Buessing and Mitch Buessing.

Frankfort was able to close the gap going into halftime with a balanced scoring effort, but Axtell still took a 25-24 lead into the half.

The third quarter is where the Wildcats took control as senior Garret Dalinghaus scored six points in the quarter to give Frankfort a 41-34 lead going into the fourth.

Dalinghaus was then able to seal the victory in the fourth as he knocked down all six of his free throw attempts to finish with a game-high 21 points.

Behind Dalinghaus, Aiden Gerstner added 11 points while Samuel Gros chipped in nine.

Axtell was led in the loss by Mitch Buessing’s 12 points while Quinn Buessing added 10.

Girls Third Place: #8 Frankfort 48, #7 Washington County 40

In the girl’s third place game Frankfort won each quarter and extended a lead throughout to claim third place with a 48-40 win over Washington County.

The Wildcats jumped out to an 11-9 lead after one behind a pair of 3-pointers from Kacia Shirley and extended the lead to 23-19 at half behind six second quarter points from Alli Tommer.

Mariah Broxterman then notched eight third quarter points to give Frankfort a four-point lead going into the fourth before the Cats sealed the game with a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the charity stripe in the fourth.

Broxterman finished as the leading scorer for the Wildcats with 13 points while Kennen Brandt added 10.
