Wetmore Girls, Troy Boys Advance in Class 1A Valley Falls Regional

The postseason continued Tuesday night for area high school basketball teams with Class 1A teams in regional play and at Wetmore the Cardinal girls advanced with a 43-27 win over Troy while the Trojan boys moved on with a 66-54 win.

GIRLS

In the opening game of the night the Wetmore girls took control being a 16-4 second quarter and moved on to the regional semifinals with a 43-27 win over Troy.

The 16-4 second broke a tie after the first quarter and the Cardinals took firm control and led 34-13 after three behind an 11-2 third.

In the fourth quarter Troy tried to mount a comeback and pulled all the way back within 11 points with 2:30 left on 3-pointers from Reagan Hill and Paityn Engemann but couldn’t get any closer the rest of the way.

Wetmore forced Troy into 20 turnovers in the win and shot 36 free throws including 13 from sophomore Kenzie Strathman who went 9-of-13 from the line and finished with 13 points while Reagan Osterhaus added 12.

In the loss Troy had Engemann score 11 points to lead the way while Reagan Hill added eight as the Trojans end their season with a record of 3-18.

The Cardinals (11-10) with the win now advance to the semifinals of the Valley Falls Regional and will take on top-seeded Burlingame Friday night at 6 p.m. with live coverage on 103.9 KNZA and 92.1 KMZA.

Wetmore: Kenzie Strathman – 13, Reagan Osterhaus – 12, Campbell Brown – 8, Kaitlyn Claycamp – 7, Abbigail Shumaker – 2, Alyssa Bloom – 1.

Troy: Paityn Engemann – 11, Reagan Hill – 8, Avery Euler – 5, Holly Williams – 3.

BOYS

The boy’s game was extremely competitive throughout with neither side leading by more than four points until the fourth quarter when Troy took control to move on in regionals with a 66-44 win over Wetmore.

The Cardinals jumped out in front after the first quarter and led 14-11 before Troy came back and outscored Wetmore 19-14 in the second to lead 30-28 at the half with both teams shooting at a good clip from mid-range.

The third quarter turned into a battle between Troy’s Jerrit Norris and Wetmore’s Braden Henry as Norris scored 14 points in the quarter while Henry scored 15 giving the Cardinals at 47-46 lead going into the fourth.

In that fourth quarter it turned into the Griffin Weber show as the Troy sophomore scored 11 points as the Trojans outscored Wetmore 20-7 in the fourth to come away with the win.

Troy (6-15) drilled six 3-pointers in the win with Norris and Weber each scoring 22 points and the Trojans advance to take on top-seeded Valley Falls Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.

In the loss Wetmore got 30 points from sophomore Braden Henry who was great all night long as the Cardinals end the season with a record of 6-15.
