Sabetha Caps Sweep With 2OT Win Against Jeff West
By Justin Fluke

GIRLS - Sabetha 40, Jeff West 27
BOYS - Sabetha 67, Jeff West 53 in 2 OT

GIRLS
Sabetha scored the first six points of the game and never trailed taking a 19-14 led into halftime and pulling away with a 10-4 third quarter.  Freshman, Alexis McAfee, led all scorers with 12 points including a deep early trey to get Sabetha off to a good start.  McAfee, the point guard and Citizen State Bank and Trust Company "Player to Bank On," also made 5 of 7 free throws and had several steals, rebounds and assists while setting the tone for a Bluejay defense that didn't allow a 10 point quarter to the visiting Tigers.  Kacey Rieger added 10 points for Sabetha who improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the Big 7 as they will take a #10 ranking in Class 3A girls to Holton on Tuesday.  Jeff West had 18 turnovers but was ice cold following the winter break and only made 4 of 15 free throws while also battling big trouble.  Sydnee Mundhenke scored 10 as the Lady Tigers dropped to 2-2 in league play and 3-3 overall heading to Royal Valley on Tuesday.

BOYS
It was a miserable start to the new year for the Sabetha boys who trailed 12-3 after one quarter and was down 23-10 at halftime while committing 15 turnovers.  Still down 35-23 entering the fourth quarter, it was sophomore Kellen Russell who came off the bench in his first varsity action of the season and hit a couple huge treys in the fourth quarter and got Sabetha going.  Russell would go on to score 12 points and earn "Player to Bank On" honors from Citizens State Bank and Trust Company of Hiawatha.  The Bluejays tied the game at 43 with :35 left on a pair of free throws by McKenzie McAfee, who scored a game high 15 points.  Jacob Frey then hit a lane-runner with :09 left to tie the game at 45 and Jeff West missed a layup at the end of regulation.  Both teams scored 4 points in overtime (McAfee had all 4 for Sabetha) and the Tigers missed another chance to win on a shot at the buzzer of overtime one.  Sabetha, who had not led since 1-0 and trailed by as many as 16 in the second half, started the second overtime on a 13-0 run and forced 9 Tiger turnovers in overtime to secure the huge comeback win.  Frey added 11 while Gaven Schumann chipped in 10 for the Bluejays who improved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the Big 7.  Mitchell Beal and Alex Miller each scored 13 for Jeff West who ended up with 25 turnovers and is now 2-2 in the league and 3-3 overall.  Sabetha only had 8 turnovers in the final 24 minutes of the game and hit 19 of 35 free throws while Jeff West did not attempt a single free throw in the two extra sessions.
