Atchison and Nemaha Central Rack Up Wins at Thunder Classic

The Thunder Classic in Seneca continued Tuesday night with a pair of entertaining games which featured Atchison and Nemaha Central picking up victories.

Game 1: Atchison 70, Jackson Heights 54

The opening game of the night saw both offenses start hot with Atchison scoring their first 18 points on 3-pointers including three from sophomore Trey Carter which gave the Phoenix a 24-19 lead after one.

Atchison started to build their lead in the second quarter behind strong defensive play forcing 10 Cobra turnovers while Carter added eight more points giving the Phoenix a 38-24 lead at the half.

The lead extended to as many as 19 points in the third quarter for Atchison, but Jackson Heights started to battle back and trimmed it back down to 14 going into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth the Cobras continued to battle back with Jason Bosley leading the way and cut the deficit down to seven, but Atchison went 5-for-5 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal it.

Carter led the way for Atchison scoring 24 points on five 3-pointers while Xiomar Hernandez and Jeter Purdy each added 16.

Jackson Heights was led in the loss by Bosley who finished with 23 points while Devin Mock and Haden Doyle added eight.

Next up for Atchison is St. Marys Academy Thursday night while Jackson Heights is 0-2 in the tournament and will play Marysville on Saturday.

Game 2: Nemaha Central 55, Marysville 52

Game two was close throughout with Marysville leading throughout but Nemaha Central battled to pick up the 3-point win.

The Bulldogs started quick with six different players scoring to jump out to an 18-13 lead after one.

The second quarter quickly turned into a free throw shooting contest with over 35 free throws shot between the two sides in the first half with Marysville shooting 9-of-14 from the line to take a 35-27 lead into the half.

After having three starters with three fouls in the first half, the Thunder finally got rolling in the third quarter and cut the deficit to just one heading to the fourth behind 10 points from senior Kurtis Beck.

Beck would score six more points in the fourth while Carter Lutz drilled a huge 3-pointer and added seven points giving the Thunder a 3-point lead late.

Marysville had a chance to tie the game with the ball at halfcourt and 9 seconds left, but Sam Jesperson missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer allowing Nemaha Central to escape.

Beck led the Thunder in scoring with 24 points on the night while Lutz and Marcus Beck each added 14.

Marysville was led by 16 points from Jack Lauer, while Jesperson added 11.

Marysville is 0-2 in the Thunder Classic with both losses by three points and will wrap up the tournament Saturday against Jackson Heights while Nemaha Central will finish pool play Thursday against Hiawatha.
