TVL Tourney Recap -- Axtell Boys and Washington County Girls Win

The 2013 Twin Valley League tournament is in the book and it was full of action packed non-stop action on the hardwood as history was made in the TVL with the winners of the tournament. On the boys side the Axtell Eagles won their first TVL tournament crown and did it after playing in the consolation games last year. Washington County Lady Tigers made history, too as they captured their third straight TVL title.

Championship

Boys -- Axtell won 60-57 over Valley Heights

It was a quick 8-0 start for the Axtell Eagles to the game and they never relinquish the lead for the rest of the game as they weather and matched the runs by the Valley Heights Mustangs in the contest to win it 60-57. With the win Axtell earned its first TVL tournament title in school history, becoming the ninth different boys squad to win the TVL tournament (total includes Bern, which closed last year).

The Eagles stretched the lead out multiple times, but Valley Heights made a few runs of their own to stay in the ballgame and ultimately missed a three-pointer at the end of the game that would have tied the game.

Leading the way for Axtell was senior, Aaron Schmelzle and junior, Payton Heinen with 15 and 12 points, respectively, as they continued to lead the Eagles throughout the tournament. Senior, Taylor Platt added 11 points in the championship.

For Valley Heights in the loss junior, Charles Musil paced the way with 24 points, while Derek Trimble chipped in 10 points, too.

The Eagles closed out the tournament a perfect 4-0 in action playing on day one as the seven seed and winning the entire tourney and improving to 9-5 on the season. Mustangs fall to 8-3 with the loss and finish second place in the TVL tournament.

Girls -- Washington County 58-48 over Baileyville-B&B 

The Lady Tigers of Washington County haven't lost many games over the last three years and in that process had won the last two TVL tournament titles and were looking to make history and become the first TVL team girls or boys to winning three straight tournament crowns.

The Lady Falcons of B&B tired to make sure that the Tigers didn't make history and the Falcons got off to a 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Washington County answered with a 23-14 second quarter to take the lead and they wouldn't give it up matching the Falcons runs throughout the rest of the game to win 58-48.

Tigers point guard and floor general senior, Megan Stegman lead the way with 27 points while sophomore, Erin Alexander added 12 points in the win. For B&B they were lead by the tandem of Laura and Erica Sudbeck who both tallied 14 points each in the loss.

With the win Washington County remained unbeaten on the season improving to 12-0 on the year and won their third straight TVL tournament title. B&B with the loss fell to 10-2 on the year with both of their loss coming at the hands of Washington County.

3rd Place Games

Girls --- Valley Heights 46-24 over Frankfort

Lead by perhaps the most offensively gifted player in the TVL the Valley Heights Lady Mustangs established an early lead over the Lady Wildcats of Frankfort cruising to a 46-24 win. That player is freshman, Brandi Roepke who poured out 32 points of the 46 scored by Valley Heights to lead the way, as she registered her second 30 plus point game of the TVL tourney.

Valley Heights pushed out to a 21-11 lead at the half. Frankfort struggled in the contest only registering single digits in all four quarters of play against the Mustangs.

Frankfort was lead by Ashley Joseph and Arianna Martin who eached tallied six points on the night.

The Mustangs with the win improved to 8-3 on the year capturing third place in the TVL tournament, while Frankfort falls to 8-3 on the season with the loss.

Boys --- Centralia 45-43 over Frankfort

On their home floor it was a fast start for the Frankfort Wildcats who pushed out to a 15-5 lead after the first period, but then the Centralia Panthers battled consistently through the next three quarters to ultimately complete the comeback and take third place in the TVL tournament with a 45-43 win over Frankfort.

Guard play lead the way for Frankfort in the loss as junior, Lucas Adams tallied 14 points and senior, Calahan Brown added 10 points of his own. For Centralia it was junior, Sam Steinlage leading the way as he finished with a game-high 20 points. Junior, Devin Rempe added 11 points on the night for Centralia, having his second double figure game of the tournament.

With the win Centralia improves to 7-4 on the year with the win taking home a third place finish, while Frankfort fell to 6-6 on the season with the loss.

5th Place Games

Boys --- Hanover 55-53 over Washington County

Both teams looking to respond with two wins to end the tournament after falling in the quarterfinals it was the Hanover Wildcats coming out on top over the Washington County Tigers, 55-53.

Hanover pushed out to a nine point lead at the half 29-20, but Washington County rallied in the second half to close the margin but ultimately the Wildcats held on for by two points. Wildcats were lead by Andrew Bruna who registered 25 points on the night. Wade Steinfort and Cody Neiman added 10 and 12 points each for Hanover in the win.

For Washington County it was Chase Wilkens and Andrew Tiemeyer leading the way with 18 and 13 points, respectively on the night.

Hanover with the win earned their eighth win of the year improving to 8-3 on their way to fifth in the TVL tournament, while Washington County suffered their fourth loss of the year falling to 8-4.

Girls --- Hanover 48-42 over Linn

Like their counterparts the boys squad the Lady Wildcats of Hanover capped off their TVL Tournament with a pair of wins taking home a fifth place finish as they dispatched the Lady Bulldogs of Linn, 48-42.

Hanover would get it done in the game behind a balanced attack as four players registered double figures in the game. Tiffany Bruna lead the way with 13 points, while Claire Bruna, Courtney Jueneman and Collen Klecan all added 10 points each.

For Linn on the night senior, Hazel Hornbostel was the only player to finish with double figures in the matchup as she tallied 10 points.

Hanover with the win registered a fifth place finish in the TVL tourney improved to 6-5 on the season, as Linn with the loss fell to 5-8 on the year.

7th Place Games

Girls --- Centralia 51-44 over Wetmore

Down by 10 at the half the Lady Panthers of Centralia used 18 point third and fourth quarters to register the comeback win 51-44 over the Lady Cardinals of Wetmore. Wetmore pushed out to the early lead with a 14-3 first quarter and lead it 25-15 at the half, but loss the lead and were unable to get it back in the second half down the stretch.

Cardinals finished the game with three players in double figures but it was enough as Dana Kramer lead the way for Wetmore with 15 points while Amber Meggison added 13 and Jordan Evans chipped in 11 points.

Centralia on the day was lead by the sophomore, Amaris Jones who registered a 20 point performance in the win for the Panthers to help them grab a seventh place finish in the TVL tournament.

The Panthers with the win improved to 4-7 on the season, while Wetmore fell to 6-5 with the loss.

Boys --- Onaga 42-34 over Baileyville-B&B

The top two seeds coming into the tournament were just looking to leave the tournament with a win as they battled against each other. The Onaga Buffaloes and B&B Falcons fought each other back-and-forth throughout the contest with the Buffaloes holding on down the stretch for the 42-34 win.

Onaga was lead by the senior, Mitchell Kufahl and sophomore, Wyatt Cordell who tallied 12 and 11 points each on the day for the Buffaloes. B&B was lead by Dustin Rottinghaus with 10 points in the loss.

The Buffaloes with the win improved to 9-3 on the season, while B&B fell to 8-4 on the year with the loss.

Consolation Games

Boys --- Wetmore 70-63 over Blue Valley-Randolph

The Wetmore Cardinals came into the TVL tournament looking for their first win of the season and in their last game of the tournament they earned that first win of the year taking down Blue Valley-Randolph with a 70-63 win.

Wetmore pushed out to a 38-29 lead at the half and held on to that lead in the second half to earn the win. The Cardinals were lead by Kyle Shumaker who had his best game of the season pouring out 26 points for the Cardinals in the win.

In the loss Blue Valley had three players register double figures with Bobby O'Neill leading the way with 22 points; Levi Peter and Marshall Carey each added double figures with 15 and 11 points.

With the win Wetmore improved to 1-9 on the season and end the TVL tournament on a high note, while Blue Valley fell to 1-9 on the season.

Boys --- Clifton-Clyde 30-28 over Linn

Just like many of the other games in the tournament this game was a close one down to the wire coming between Clifton-Clyde and Linn. The Bulldogs got off to a 14-5 led at the end of the first quarter but the Eagles of Clifton-Clyde continually battled back into the game ultimately to grab the 30-28 win.

Lucas Barnfort lead the way for Clifton-Clyde in the contest with nine points on the day, while Nic Shaefer, Chad Gross and Josh Meyer each finished the game with eight points for Linn in the loss.

Clifton-Clyde with the win earned their second win of the year improving to 2-9, while Linn fell to 5-7 with the loss.

Girls --- Clifton-Clyde 38-34 over Blue Valley-Randolph

It was a late surge using a 14-9 fourth quarter that propelled Clifton-Clyde to the win over Blue Valley, 38-34. In a tight ballgame Clifton-Clyde needed the five point swing in the fourth quarter to gain the lead and grab the win for themselves in the TVL tournament.

Airika Long and Elizabeth Norbet lead the way for the Lady Eagles with 11 and 13 points each in the game while Brittany Pfaff tallied 17 points for Blue Valley in the loss.

Clifton-Clyde improved to 3-8 with win while Blue Valley-Randolph fell to 0-10 on the season and are still searching for their first win of the season.

Girls --- Axtell 44-19 over Onaga

The Lady Eagles made it back-to-back wins to close out the TVL tournament as they took care of business against the Lady Buffaloes. Axtell established a 22-10 lead at halftime and went on to win the game 44-19 over Onaga.

The freshman tandem of Kriesten Talbot and Courtny Heinen paced the way again with 11 and nine points on the day for Axtell. Sophomore, Katelyn Kolterman lead Onaga on the day with nine points.

With the win Axtell improves to 4-8 on the season, while Onaga fell to 4-7 with the loss.
